The pep talk

Be prepared for prom

So, you’ve got the suit, you’ve made pre-Prom plans with the boys and you’re pumped for a night out. So how do you make an entrance? Unless you’ve got a sound technician at hand to blast out the Rocky soundtrack as you strut through the door, I’ve got a three-step route to success. Groom, prep, ride.

peptalk_1

Step 1. Groom

I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again. A slick hair cut is essential. Whether you wear yours long, short or shaved – book yourself in to the barbers ahead of the main event. Next, it’s time to pick a scent. Either stay safe with your staple, or try a new one in advance. I repeat, try this in advance. There’s nothing worse than a dodgy smell that lingers all night.

Step 2. prep

Fail to prepare, prepare to fail. And nobody likes a failure, do they? Freshly ironed suit? Check. Polished shoes? Check – I’ve shown you how to do this, too. Keys, card, wallet, phone, chewing gum? Check. Game face? Check. Date? Who cares. You’re prepped and ready for Prom.

STEP 3. PULL (UP) IN STYLE

Whether you’re riding solo, with a date, or with your mates, we’ve got the ultimate Prom accessory up for grabs. Drumroll, please. A Rolls Royce Dawn. That’s right, you can pull up at Prom in a chauffeur driven Rolls Royce Dawn. What are you waiting for? Enter the competition, now.

Disclaimer: The Rolls Royce Dawn is just for one night. Cool credentials are for life.

Size matters. No, seriously…

HOW TO SIZE UP THIS PROM

Unless you want to turn up to Prom looking like you borrowed your dad’s old suit – too long on the leg, embarrassingly wide at the waist – there are some hard facts to be learnt. You’ve got to size it up right to avoid looking like an extra in The Inbetweeners. Yeah, a belt may keep those trousers from falling to your ankles, but it doesn’t mean they look good. Take notes from the master. It’s all about the perfect fit.

sizematters_1

The fit

You’re one of four guys. The sharp character (skinny fit), the smooth operator (slim), the gent (tailored) or the straight-up classic (regular). Whilst the skinny fit features thin lapels and a close-fit trouser, the slim is all about a sharp-shouldered jacket and a narrowleg trouser. Are you the gent? The tailored suit abides by the core rules of tailoring, whilst the regular is a classic, with a looser fit.

sizematters_2

JACKETS & SHIRTS

Once you’ve picked your fit there’s one thing you need to know about sizing up a jacket. It should always be 4-6 inches bigger than your waist size. And when it comes to the sleeves, these should be measured from the shoulder to the cuff. For the shirt, measure your neck size. Avoid getting hot under the collar by leaving room to breathe.

sizematters_3

Trousers

Who wears the trousers? You do. When it comes to measuring, run a tape around your natural waistline. Don’t be alarmed, this is likely to be a size bigger than your jeans. You haven’t over done the bulk. For length, you need to measure your inside leg from crotch to ankle bone (the trousers should sit on the shoe). It’s tricky to maneuver alone, get help from a trusted mate.

Keep it clean

How to polish your shoes

If you want to know how to take care of your new football boots, you ask Beckham. If you want to know how to polish your shoes for prom, you ask me. A pair of sturdy leathers can last you a lifetime, but not if you knock them about. You’ve got to treat them right. It’s real simple, these are the steps you need to know.

shoes-1

Step 1: Cleanse

Treat your shoes like you treat your face. The key to crack-free, shiny leather is a good old moisturise. First things first, remove the laces (just like you don’t want cream in your hair, you don’t want polish on your laces). Next, wipe away any surface dirt with a brush. Here comes the cleanse. Apply leather conditioner to an old t-shirt and rub in a circular motion. This will fill in your cracks.

shoes-2

STEP 2: POLISH

Choose a cream or wax based polish in a shade that matches your shoes. If in doubt, go lighter, unless you want to completely change the colour. Apply the polish in a circular motion (like we did with the cleanser), then buff vigorously with a brush and leave your shoes to dry.

shoes-3

STEP 3: SHINE

In the words of Take That, “let it shine”. But no, seriously. Step one, dab some polish onto the t-shirt, and add a few drops of water onto the leather. Step two, bring the elbow grease. Polish the water away until you’ve got a smooth, shiny, mirror-like finish that would give a member of the military a run for their money.

STEP 4: STEP BACK

It’s time to admire your handy work.

Be a man

Accessorise

Boys, lads, gents. It’s time to bring your A-game. That’s “A” for accessories. A one-step success route to ensuring your look is on-point at prom.

accessories-3

If anyone knows a thing or two about looking decent, it’s me. And, when it comes to getting dressed up for prom, there are a few things to know. Being a man isn’t just about growing some balls and waiting for your voice to break. It’s about getting your sh** together, being accomplished. My plan is fool proof. These are what I call the five style commandments:

1. It’s all about the finishing touches. There’s no point suiting up if your hair looks like you’ve been driving around with the roof down all day. Slick hair styling is a must.

accessories-4

2. In all honesty, your trousers should be a perfect fit (thanks to me). However, a belt completes the look. Opt for a simple leather band and buckle if you want your suit to go the extra mile.

3. Tie or bow-tie. Never both (duh). If you’re a Fresh Prince fan, kick it back to the 80’s with the latter. For a classic look, it’s the tie. But at the end of the day, it’s whichever floats your boat.

accessories-2

4. Don’t forget your cufflinks. Have you ever seen Hardy strutting about with his cuffs hanging loose? No. It’s essential you have a set.

5. Your socks must match. This is not a drill. It’s not hard either. You will wear matching socks to prom.

Let’s get things straight

How to iron like a pro

iron-1

Listen up, lads. It’s time to straighten up your act. And don’t even think about asking your mum or dad to help.

You’ve chosen a pair of spot-on trousers (not too tight, never too long), you’ve committed to a velvet lined jacket because you’re going in hard on the suave, and your shirt is ready to be pressed. Do not cut corners, unless you want to look as crumpled as an empty packet of cheese and onion Walkers. It’s time to learn how to iron like a pro.

STEP 1:

Switch on the iron (no sh**).

iron-2

STEP 2:

Different fabrics need different heat. “But how do I know what temperature?”. Use your eyes, check the label on your shirt/trousers/jacket, then match up the fabric with the handy dial on the iron.

STEP 3:

Place the item on the board. Shirts get ironed from the collar down, trousers go from the waist to the leg. Iron slowly, but not too slow that you burn your suit. Burning yourself is also to be avoided. The only thing that should be red hot on Prom Night is your suit.

The kit you need to work smarter

performance_suit_tip_header_image_3

The weekday wardrobe: it’s easy to get stuck in a rut when you’re faced with strict office dress codes. But with a few styling tricks up your well-ironed sleeve, you can create a bank of different looks to get you through the week. Here’s how to build a wardrobe that’ll get the job done:

Let’s start with the suit. For busy days, we suggest the Performance suit. With natural stretch, a breathable lining, crease recovery and a water and stain resistant finish, it’s made to take care of business. Save the waistcoat for days you need to make a big impression and stick to a 2-piece for easy-to-wear, everyday style. This bright blue shade will set you apart from all the usual greys and navies in the boardroom but still looks professional.

Next up, the shirt. A traditional choice for the British office, the formal striped shirt is a classic you can rely on. If you’re a regular fit guy, opt for Savoy Taylors Guild. Choose bold stripes in bright colours for impact, or a slimmer stripe for a more discreet effect.

For a contemporary look, our pick is this Moss slim fit textured stripe shirt. Made from 100% cotton with an easy-to-iron finish, it’ll get you out the door through to post-work dinner without breaking a sweat. Even better, its optic-effect stripes and wider collar give it a premium feel that’s bound to impress clients – and your boss.

performance_suit_tip_post_image

And now the accessories. Here’s where you can dial up the mood, depending on what’s on the agenda for the day.

For a failsafe option to complement your blue suit and striped shirt, stick to similarly coloured accessories.

This navy knitted tie will add a little texture for interest and a plain white pocket square will always look smart. Fold it in thirds, rather than half, for a neater look. A bit of advice: always stick to cotton pocket squares for the office as a satin one is better suited to weddings and other special occasions.

Bring the look up a notch by keeping the white pocket square but swapping the navy knitted tie out for this wine coloured one, which will really pop against your blue suit. Great if you want to stand out in a meeting, without distracting from all the important things you’ve got to say.

Want to take it a step further? This navy striped silk tie will mirror the pattern of your shirt but its broken stripe pattern is a more modern take on plainer styles. Switch out the plain pocket square for this Moss stitched edge version. It’s a sharper option and its edging picks up the colours of the tie. Little touches like this make all the difference to set you apart as someone who cares about the details.

Last but not least, let’s talk about what you put on your feet. Blue suits should always be worn with brown shoes, and you can’t go wrong with classic derby lace-ups like these ones by John White. Unadorned bar the neat stitching, they’re a sophisticated finishing touch that’ll take you seamlessly from the office to the bar.

Alternatively, these textured derbies will subtly complement the knitted tie options mentioned above. They’re a little less formal, though, so keep these for days when you can afford to dress a touch more casually.

And there you have it: one suit, several styling options to see you through the week. The kit you need to work smarter.
