HERE’S HOW TO MAKE COLOUR WORK FOR YOU

Words: L. Thorpe

When it comes to colour, it’s easy to stay in your comfort zone and stick to neutrals. But that can mean missing out on colour trends and wearing colours that work for you. Colour isn’t something to be scared of and can lift your look, making you look and feel great.

Need some tips on tonal trends and how to add some colour into your outfits? Here’s how to be bold with colour when it comes to men’s fashion.

Work out what you like and what works for you

Sometimes, the only way to figure out which colours work for you is to try them out. This means picking up colours you’d never normally choose and seeing how they work with your skin tone, eye colour, hair colour and the rest of your wardrobe. With certain colours, it’s easy to tell straight away whether they’re for you or not.

While some colours might not look or feel quite right, something in a similar tone might work for you. There may also be some colours that you’re naturally more drawn to. Most colours are classed as warm or cool, and in general pair best with themselves.

Cool colours are green, blue and purple, while warm colours are red, orange, yellow, cream, brown, tan and olive. White, grey and black are neutral and pair with most things, but in fashion terms they’re usually classed as cool.  Neutral colours tend to go with everything and can create a backdrop for your colour choices to shine.

What do different colours mean?

Colour trends in men’s fashion often change with the seasons, but there are plenty of colours that have meaning behind them all year round. They’re often associated with different feelings and personality traits, acting as a mood-booster on days when you’re not feeling great, or sending out calming vibes when you need them.

Here are some common associations with different colours:

– Yellow, orange, or other vibrant warm shades boost energy and happiness

– Blue and blue-greens are calming, stress-busting colours

– Red, pink and red-based purples are said to convey passion

– Brown, tan and beige convey natural warmth and earthiness.

– White projects cleanliness and peace.

Wondering how to add some colour trends into your wardrobe? Here are some ways to be bold with your colour choices without feeling out of place.

Moss Sage Suit With Botinelli Tie

Accent colours

Not ready for colour across your whole outfit? Not many of us are, but using small accents can ease you into utilising colour in your wardrobe. Try pairing a sage flannel suit with a patterned Botinelli tie – not only does it lift the outfit, but allows you to incorporate colour in a small and subtle way. You can even try adding a matching sock or pocket square to round out the look. Alternatively, a shacket or overshirt like our navy brushed checked overshirt has acid green threads weaved into it – they’re an understated but intentional detail that integrates a bright colour in a much softer way.

A colour trim, print or buttons on an outfit is a great way of adding accents too – our burgundy tie dye shirt is a great way of injecting a shot of colour into a muted outfit. Or how about designing your own trims? With a Custom Made suit you can choose it all, from colourful linings right down to the colour we stitch the button holes with.

Moss Blue Merino Roll Neck Jumper

Colour blocking

If you haven’t heard of colour blocking, you might find it a surprisingly easy way to be bolder with colour. It involves pairing solid blocks of colours together – they might contrast or complement each other, but the key is to create distinct areas of solid colour. It’s bold, fun and adds a little extra to an outfit, especially if the rest is neutral. You can layer up and draw attention to different parts of your outfit. A deep blue roll neck with a neutral trouser can uplift a day look, and can easily transition into an evening outfit too.

Moss Red Roll Neck Jumper

Tonal colour

Tonal dressing is up there with one of the easiest but most impactful ways of adding colour to your look. It’s about choosing a hue and committing to tonal variations throughout your outfit. Pair a red roll neck with suit trousers, and throw over the matching jacket for a vibrant yet sophisticated look. The different shades all work together to create a look that’s full of colour but looks intentional.

Moss Mulberry Flannel Suit

Coloured suit

There’s nothing wrong with a black or navy suit, but today’s tailoring comes in all sorts of interesting shades. If you’re new to colourful suits, try a muted mulberry styled with a grey rollneck – the toned down berry tone is a great way to ease you into colour wear. You could also swap your navy two-piece for a powder blue flannel to brighten things up a bit. Up for something bolder? Try a slim fit corduroy suit in red or olive for the winter months. Styled with neutral shirts and shoes, they’re easier to wear than you might think and as it’s double breasted, will instantly elevate a casual look. They’re also bound to stand out against everyone else’s classic suit colours.

Cord goes contemporary

Cord’s back – here’s how to wear it now.

Moss Cord Olive Green DB Jacket

CORD IS BACK – HERE’S HOW TO WEAR IT NOW

Words: L. Holmes

The origins of corduroy are somewhat shrouded in mystery. Was it really, as some would have us believe, a velvety cloth only permitted to be worn by French kings? Or is its lineage more down to earth, with this durable textile probably originating in industrial towns where workers required a cloth that would stand up to the rigours of a hard day’s graft? Who knows? But whichever tale you choose to believe, what isn’t in doubt is that this long-lasting fabric has stood the test of time.

Which type of cord should I buy?

The ridges that give cord its characteristic feel are called wales, coming in various degrees of thickness such as needle and jumbo. As its name suggests, needlecord is the thinner and more flattering of the two and should therefore be your go-to when it comes to including cord on your latest shopping list.

Moss Blonde Camel Cord Trousers

How should I wear cord?

Wearing cord on a daily basis is a cinch. A medium-wale cord trouser is a welcome alternative to a standard chino or worker jogger – ours comes with a dropped crotch and an internal drawcord that softens the look, making it a great transitional piece. Wear yours with a tonal fine knit roll-neck and finish with the matching suit jacket.

Cord is a warm, soft fabric that works well for the cooler months, which is why it lends itself well to light jackets and overshirts. A great layering piece, taupe overshirt is a smart addition to your transitional wardrobe and can be worn over t-shirts or roll necks, or under thicker coats when the temperatures drop.

Moss Tailored Fit Cord Olive Suit

Moss Slim Fit Copper Cord Suit

Can I wear a cord suit?

The cord suit has had a bit of a resurgence, which is great news for this versatile getup. It’s a classic British look, worn throughout the year but specifically in the colder months due to it’s weight and durability.

Ours have received an update, and this season we’ve combined classic colours with more contemporary hues. Our olive-green double breasted offers up sophistication as a suit, but works equally as well as separates and is a fitting colour for the season. It’s also cut to a more current tailored fit, modernising the overall aesthetic. Wear with an Oxford shirt and a silk tie for a refined finish.

A copper cord suit has a vintage feel – ours has been modernised through the soft shoulders and relaxed look. As workwear, it can be combined with a smart shirt and loafers. Transition into evening dinner or drinks by swapping the shirt out for a soft, merino wool roll-neck.

If you want to elevate your look further, our slim fit ink suit has a very fine wale and works well with crisp shirts and fine knits alike. The deep ink hue complements most neutral tones but if you’re feeling extra bold, wear over a red-toned knit and watch the heads turn.

Moss Slim Fit Ink Cord Suit

What if I want to wear a cord suit as separates?

Cord suits can easily be split up and worn as separates. Less formal than a pair of standard suit bottoms, the trousers can be worn with chunky knits or casual shirts depending on the weather and occasion. For those tricky smart/casual events, trade your black jeans for a pair of inky cord trousers and combine with a mock neck for a bit more sophistication.

The versatility of the cord blazer means you can get a lot of looks out of one item. Our winter white cord jacket may be double breasted, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be dressed down for a more casual feel. Throw on top of a crew neck and chinos and you have Sunday lunch dressing sorted.

Moss Winter White Cord Jacket

What about cord accessories?

Cord isn’t just for suiting – headgear has also been upgraded this season, with the fine wales of cord lending themselves to hats too. Our winter white cord baseball cap is soft to touch and will keep your head warm and cosy through the colder months. It’s a great casual addition to an outfit, whether that be head-to-toe cord or something a bit sportier. Finish with a pair of neutral trainers and your weekend look is ready to go.

Flannel: your winter wardrobe’s allrounder

Take comfort to the next level.

TAKE COMFORT TO THE NEXT LEVEL

Words: C. Stewart

Soft, warm and generally a pleasure to wear – feel-good flannel is the comfort dressing you need for the changing season. Often used in checked shirts, this soft yet rugged and warm material is one we’ve incorporated in our suits over several seasons – now, however, you’ll find flannel lending itself to coats, trousers, accessories and more. Here’s why flannel should be a staple in your winter line-up.

Moss Navy Brushed Gilet

What is flannel?

Flannel is a fabric that goes through a brushing process to remove any lint and fibres, creating an incredibly soft finish. This brushed effect is why  flannel is so warm – its down-like surface traps air, locking in your body heat.

Why should I wear flannel?

Flannel is thought to originate in sixteenth-century Wales when it was used for its warmth. Jump forward a few hundred years to the Industrial Revolution, and men across the pond were wearing it to keep warm while building the railways. It’s very much considered a worker’s fabric, which means that it lends well to relaxed styles such as overshirts and casual coats. As relaxed fashion trends begin to rise, men are starting to consider more laidback looks, even in tailoring. This means that materials like flannel are very much back on the tailoring table.

Aside from being soft and warm, flannel is a strong fabric and takes well to being cut into a suit or outerwear because it holds its shape. It’s also lightweight and malleable, making it one of the more comfortable options. That’s a plus  if you’ll be wearing it for long periods of time at work or a wedding.

Our feel-good flannel picks for AW23

The Gilet

Gilets are a great transitional piece. Worn when it’s not quite cold enough for a coat, they’re a casual staple that can see you through country walks or relaxed city weekends. They can even tone down a business look if worn over a smart shirt. Our brushed navy gilet is crafted from a recycled fabric with a soft flannel lining to keep you extra cosy. It’s also lightweight and breathable, so works hard as a layer without adding too much bulk.

The Flannel Trouser

Flannel doesn’t just have to be for your top half. Our tailored flannel trousers look great for the office, but can easily refine a casual autumn winter outfit too. Crafted from 100% soft-touch wool, they’re sure to keep you warm in the cooler months but are breathable enough for warmer days too. Combine with a tonal blazer and a crisp white shirt, or pair with a chunky knit or a rollneck for a relaxed daytime look.

The Suit

If occasion calls for a suit but you care about ease of wear, flannel is a great way of staying comfortable while still remaining sharp. Our slim fit copper suit is made from a comfy stretch cloth with tightly woven fibres – this helps with trapping pockets of air to insulate in cooler temperatures. We’ve also brushed it inside and out for a modern, matte look and a super-soft hand feel.

The Overshirt

With an overshirt, flannel is in its element, doing what it does best. Our wintry take on a safari overshirt is crafted from a soft wool blend with a brushed finish and is cut to a tailored fit, smartening up a casual look with ease. Try it in place of a jacket for cool days, then layer with knits to lock in heat between your coat and base layer when it’s extra cold.

Moss Off-White Flannel Overshirt

The Baseball Cap

It’s not just about the clothing; accessories have also received the flannel treatment. Our brushed wool baseball caps are great for keeping your head warm while maintaining a relaxed, easy aesthetic. Pair with the brushed gilet and worker joggers for a full flannel look and stay snug out there with winter’s favourite fabric.

Groom’s winter wedding style

Explore wintry hues and heavy duty fabrics for the cooler months.

GROOM’S WINTER WEDDING STYLE

Words: C. Stewart

If your big day is happening in the coldest months of the year, summery groom staples aren’t going to cut it in a draughty church or wintry outdoor wedding shots. So, what to wear?

Your wedding’s location and styling themes will influence your outfit – perhaps the flowers for your day will have a wintry theme, or your country manor location is more suited to a heritage look. There are still ways to stand out in a look that’s all yours, though.

As a general rule, dark hues and winter-weight fabrics are made for crisp weather and shorter days, but cooler shades can also look great in winter light so don’t be afraid to step beyond the cold-weather clichés.

Tweed for grooms

Tweed tailoring is a popular choice for grooms, and with good reason. This heritage cloth has a warming hand-feel that’s great for a rustic wedding theme. But today’s tweeds also lend themselves to city celebrations and more minimalist tastes in sharp cuts and less traditional colours.

Crafted from a warm wool blend, our check tweed suit is designed for cold-weather occasions. It’s not too heavy either, which means that you won’t feel bogged down by fabric on your big day. And with a tailored fit, it offers definition on the shoulders on legs without feeling too restrictive.

For more texture, try a herringbone-weave tweed. With both visual and tactile interest, it’s a proper departure from any weekday suiting – exactly as your wedding outfit should be.

Deep shades will particularly suit winter wedding days, but light grey or blue are curveball choices that will look great in icier themes. For accessories, a knitted tie and velvet dress slippers will set off the matte texture of your tweed suit nicely.

Moss Barberis Blue Check Suit

Checked wedding suits

Pattern’s a bolder tailoring take on any day, but we’re seeing more grooms squaring up to braver looks on their big days too. A classic Prince of Wales or glen check will never date, while graphic-check fabrics are a modern choice that’ll set you apart from your guests.

Tone-on-tone check suits in navy or grey will always look elegant and form a great base for just about any shade of accessories. If you’re looking to embrace the spotlight, there’ll be no mistaking you for anything but the man of the moment in an Italian tailored fit number. This one is spun from 100% wool at Vitale Barberis Canonico, one of Italy’s finest mills, with a luxurious textured finish.

Alternatively, make grey work even on grey days by choosing a checked suit with rich accent tones, like our grey and brown version above. It’s made with insulating wool so will help to keep you warm no matter how long you have to pose in the cold for photos.

Moss Tailored Claret Suit

Flannel groom suits

If your big day’s taking place in the depths of winter, you need a cloth that can stand up to the cold. Enter: flannel.

Spun using insulating wool, our flannel suits have a brushed finish that traps warm air, making them an extra warm choice. It was originally worn by Industrial Revolution railway workers, so if it can keep them warm you can rely on it to keep the cold out at your wedding – and you can get on with warming everyone’s hearts with your vows instead.

Today, it’s less workman and more refined with a super-soft handle and saturated colours like plum, green and blue in a modern, matte finish. Wear yours as a three-piece or try it with a woollen knit for a more relaxed take.

Groom’s accessories

No groom outfit is complete without the small, distinct elements that bring it all together. As it’s your big day, choose something that truly makes a statement with a silk tie, designed and hand printed at the Tessitura Bottinelli mill. Based in Italy’s Lake Como, this family-run business has been crafting luxurious accessories for almost 100 years, using some of the world’s finest silks.

Classic paisley is always a hit, but more muted patterns work equally well too. Add a matching pocket square and silver cufflinks for a sharp finish.

The best men’s coord sets

Because nothing’s easier than throwing on a matching set.

LOOK PUT TOGETHER INSTANTLY IN A MATCHING SET

Words: L. Thorpe

As men’s tailoring moves in a more relaxed direction, it’s time to update your wardrobe and lean into this growing trend. If you’re looking to embrace this easier aesthetic, a co-ord set is a great way to look put together in a casual setting.

charcoal relaxed shacket

What are mens coord sets?

A men’s co-ord set (also known as a co-ordinate) is a matching outfit consisting of a top and bottom that complement each other. Usually this means they’re the same colour, pattern, fabric or style. They’re stylish, comfortable and usually look more put together than separates, but you can split them up and wear however you want.

Co-ord sets can be dressed up or down, depending on the occasion and your personal style. It might be a less formal take on a suit with a casual blazer and tailored trousers, or it could be joggers and a matching overshirt. A co-ord is versatile and easy to wear, whatever the season.

If you want to keep things simple, a matching co-ord set takes the guesswork out of putting together an outfit. Designed to create a cohesive and polished look, you can wear them together or as separates which is great for adding versatility to your wardrobe.

charcoal relaxed trousers

How to style a co-ord

Due to the versatility of the co-ord, you can get multiple looks out of one matching set. Our shacket and trouser set is crafted from a drapey Japanese fabric that sits loosely on the body but still offers a premium, elevated feel. Though it features an elastic waistband which leaves room for movement, the boxy fit and front pleats down the trouser makes it feel tailored and intentional, which is great if you want to smarten up a casual look.

As mentioned, sets work well as separates too. The shacket is great for layering, particularly during this transitional season. Throw over a white tee and roll the sleeves up for a casual feel, or layer over a knit for extra warmth. Button it up to make it feel more shirt-like, or wear open as a shacket.

taupe relaxed jacket

How to style a co-ord

If you’re new to coords or you’re not sure how to wear them, here are some tips to help you style them, whatever your body type or style:

  • Choose a colour or pattern that flatters you. The key to a successful co-ord is choosing a colour or pattern that complements your skin tone and personal style. If you’re unsure what looks best on you, try on a few different options and see which ones you feel the most confident and comfortable in. Ours come in two shades, taupe and charcoal, which are neutral enough to work for a variety of occasions.
  • Mix and match different pieces. While co-ords are traditionally made up of matching pieces, you don’t have to stick to this formula. Mixing and matching different pieces creates a co-ord that is unique and personal to you. Try pairing our taupe relaxed trousers with a boxy white tee for a classic look, or add a loose knit for an easy weekend outfit.
  • Pay attention to fit. The fit of your coord is just as important as the colour or pattern. Make sure that the pieces in your coord fit you well and are comfortable to wear. Avoid pieces that are too tight or too loose.
  • Accessorise wisely. The right accessories can help to complete your coord and add some personal flair. Choose accessories that complement your co-ord, such as a matching belt, trainers or shoes, or a hat and scarf in a coordinating colour. Avoid over-accessorising, as too many extras can distract from the overall look of your coord.

TAKE ON THE RELAXED AND OVERSIZED FIT TREND

Words: L. Thorpe

Tight, tailored styles are stepping back, giving way to more relaxed and oversized fits. If you’re not sure how to wear a relaxed fit without looking like you sized up by mistake, here’s everything you need to know to embrace tailoring’s new relaxed direction.

Men's relaxed coord set

What is a relaxed fit?

Despite how it sounds, a relaxed fit is not just about wearing a bigger size. It’s a style with a deliberately looser and more comfortable profile than traditional or slim fits. It tends to be a more casual style, but that’s changing a little as relaxed fit tailoring moves into the mainstream.

You might also see clothes or outfits labelled oversized. While it’s true you could wear a larger size for a roomier, streetwear-style fit, if an item is oversized it’s been specifically cut in a more relaxed fit in proportion to your size.

Relaxed fit trousers or jeans are a style of men’s loose trousers that usually have a wider leg and a more generous fit through the hips and thighs. They’re designed so you’ve got room to move around and they feel more comfortable. For relaxed fit T-shirts and shirts, it’s similar. This style usually has a broader cut across the shoulders and chest so the fabric drapes more casually, rather than being structured. Shackets and overshirts are usually more of a relaxed fit as they’re designed to be layered. The same goes for relaxed fit jumpers, hoodies and outerwear.

Do relaxed fits exist in men’s fashion?

Relaxed and oversized fits aren’t new, and have come in and out of fashion over the decades. They definitely feel right again in 2023, with looser outfits taking the place of the tight, fitted looks of the 2010s.

From the men’s runways through to the best-dressed guys out there, we’re seeing more relaxed and slouchy looks especially when it comes to suits, thanks in large to the recent resurgence in ‘90s and Y2K style.

Men's relaxed coord set

How to style a relaxed fit

While a relaxed or oversized fit can be more comfortable and appears a little looser, it’s still important to get the right size. Our oversized pieces are cut in a way that allows you to buy your usual size and still achieve that relaxed look. Sizing up may cause your outfit to look like it’s too big or unbalanced – keeping your style and proportions in place is the key to doing oversized outfits without feeling like you’re being consumed by your clothes. Consider pairing a loose-fit trouser with a fitted tee to ease into the trend.

Layering is a great way of experimenting with relaxed fits, like adding an oversized shacket or overshirt to an otherwise fitted outfit. It’s a chilled, easy touch to any look and can take something fairly dressy down a notch. Just try one piece such as a trouser in a looser fit and keep the rest of your outfit more tailored; you don’t need to make everything oversized right away. If you want to jump right in, however, our drapey relaxed co-ord is the way to go.

Men's relaxed fit options

Keeping some tailored elements and structure to your outfit can help shake off the feeling of wearing clothes that aren’t the right size. It’ll feel different to your usual more fitted style at first, especially if you’re choosing more relaxed, unstructured fabrics like linen. Experiment with layering an oversized shirt which can easily be styled with your existing suits to add new flare to an old outfit.

Don’t be scared to try some tucking and folding either, especially if you’re wondering how to style an oversized tee. You’ll be surprised how different an oversized fit works with a strategically rolled sleeve or a tuck at the waistband – it can totally change the proportions, fit, and feel of an outfit. Turn up the bottom of a relaxed-fitting trouser and style with a boot, or consider layering a tucked-in fitted tee under an oversized shirt or shacket. Throw on a higher waisted relaxed trouser with fitted knitwear, or try oversized knitwear and an overcoat with a fitted trouser. The options are endless and experimentation is key.

Striped suit

Is a relaxed suit a thing?

Wondering if you can do relaxed formalwear? One way to take on the softer tailoring trend is to move away from slim fit styles and trying out looser fits. Like our regular fit stripe suit – it’s cut from superfine wool on our most generous block with straight arms and legs. Skip the tie and enhance its slouchier feel with a soft knit instead. And don’t be scared to add some trainers – it’s about easing up the whole aesthetic.

This style works better for more casual events if you’re feeling tentative, but it can definitely work for more dressed-up codes too – some of the world’s most stylish guys have been seen in oversized looks at big events in the past 12 months.

If you really want to go easy on relaxed style, try some oversized accessories with a laid-back suit instead. A chunky scarf or hat with a more fitted outfit might feel a bit easier to wear, and still allows for a bit of experimentation.

UPDATE YOUR LEGWEAR WITH STAPLES FOR THE SEASON

Words: C. Saramowicz

As we ease into the colder seasons, it’s time to turn in your shorts and look to longer legwear. Though a sturdy pair of jeans is always a good idea, sometimes the occasion calls for something a bit smarter, comfier or just that little bit different. The good news is that just a few staples in your closet can create a versatile range that will see you through the season, and a whole lot longer. Let’s take a look at our picks below.

Relaxed chinos

Not all chinos are created equal – our version has been engineered with an elasticated waist and cotton stretch fabric for a more comfortable fit. It’s a functional and more relaxed version of a classic chino, with a removable drawcord that can be worn internally for a more formal take, or externally to ease up the look. The combinations are endless; pair with a tailored cotton shirt for work or choose a woolly roll neck and trainers for a weekend walk.

Moleskin

If you’re looking to smarten up your overall look, moleskin trousers tick all the right boxes. Made from 100% Italian cotton, the fabric is lightweight and breathable but still has a soft, luxurious hand-feel. Though moleskin is a tactile fabric, our tailored take eases up with movement which is great for work, dinner or outings alike. In a key colour for the autumn season, layer up with a chunky knit when the weather cools.

Wide leg

Casual looks get an upgrade with our wide-leg trousers. Crafted from a lightweight drapey Japanese fabric, they’re perfect for easing into a more relaxed aesthetic with their fluid, roomier fit. The wool blend gives a warmer hand-feel, making these a great alternative to the sportier jogger or a loose chino. Pair with the matching shacket for an easy, coordinated finish.

Drawstring

The drawstring is often associated with sportswear as it offers more comfort and movement, but our take elevates a traditionally casual feature. Made from sustainable cotton twill that’s stretchy and breathable, hidden fastenings smarten things up while the drawcord can be worn internally or externally depending on the desired feel. Dress them up with an Oxford or lighten the look by adding a zip neck and chunky loafers.

Our guest editor Gareth Scourfield on
how to make trousers work for you

“One of the most essential aspects is finding trousers that fit well and flatter your body shape. Whether you prefer a slim fit, straight leg, or relaxed fit, each style has its own unique impact on your overall appearance. Slim-fit trousers offer a modern and tailored look, while straight-leg trousers provide a classic and versatile option. The emergence of the drawstring trouser in traditional suiting fabrics offer comfort without compromising on style.

In addition to fit, the choice of fabric also plays a significant role in men’s trouser styles. From classic cotton twill to luxurious wool blends, each fabric brings its own texture and feel to an outfit. Heavier fabrics like wool and textured fabrics such as corduroy are ideal for colder seasons.

Paying attention to details such as pleats or no pleats can make a significant difference in achieving different aesthetics. Pleated trousers add sophistication and elegance to formal outfits, while flat-front trousers create a sleek and streamlined look suitable for both casual and formal occasions.

Incorporating the right trouser styles into your wardrobe is a game-changer when it comes to enhancing your personal style.”

Menswear now: by Gareth Scourfield

Our guest editor on the trends to take note of for AW23.

Autumn/winter 23 menswear trends

Words: G. Scourfield

Meet Gareth Scourfield, menswear stylist to high-profile clients like Ben Whishaw and Daniel Craig – and our guest editor for AW23. Here he kicks off the season with his expert take on how we’re all dressing now and the trends to take note of for the season ahead.

Men’s shopping habits have undergone pretty sizable changes over the last few years, not least as a result of the global health crisis. It brought about a shift in priorities – comfort and functionality were key considerations as people spent more time at home or outdoors and engaged in remote working. As a result, the pieces that made up the traditional wardrobe ‘script’ of some gym kit, a spattering of comfy weekend gear and a few neat hangers of work suits were either worn relentlessly or made redundant overnight. It highlighted how inflexible most of our wardrobes were before the pandemic.

And now, our lifestyles continue to evolve and will have a big influence on what pieces we choose to buy and how we wear them.

So what does that mean for this season? The main narrative for autumn/winter 23 is to find flexible, adaptable clothing that you can dress up or pair back for a number of occasions. There’s a renewed focus on the quality and longevity of pieces. Many of us want to live simpler, more responsible lives. More of us are choosing to consume less and curate more.

While hanging tight to the comfortable and practical clothing we’ve lived in these past few years is still a priority, the new season is delivering with more style, developed detail and finer fabrics.

So what are the key trends men will want to buy into this coming autumn/winter season?

Expect to see a resurgence of bold colours and patterns in menswear. Rich tones like ruby reds, vivid greens and deep blues will enrich outfits. Additionally, checks, plaids and pinstripe patterns will make a strong comeback, adding some heritage charm to our wardrobes. In terms of silhouette and style, oversized coats and casual jackets will be popular choices for outerwear this season. Layering will also play a significant role in creating stylish looks – think chunky cable knit sweaters paired with overshirts or corduroy blazers over fine knitwear.

The soft tailoring trend continues to gain momentum for AW23 as we all increasingly prioritise clothing that lets us move freely while maintaining a polished appearance. These relaxed-fit suits feature lighter-weight fabrics, unconstructed shoulders and looser silhouettes, offering a more laid-back approach to traditional tailoring. The emergence of the ‘quiet luxury’ trend looks set to continue – think well-tailored pieces, premium fabrics and really great accessories. The best pieces this season will ensure minimal effort with maximum ease. There’s also a desire to dress up again and with the social scene and life-affirming events firmly back in place, men are wanting to be braver and bolder with their fashion choices.

Let’s dive into my pick of men’s AW23 trends in a little more detail.

Layering with purpose: elevate your look and stay warm

Layering is an essential seasonal trend. By combining multiple garments, you create depth and visual interest. Try an oversized sweater, a fine-knit cardigan or a flannel overshirt layered with tailoring and coats. This not only adds warmth but adds dimension to the overall look too. Increasingly popular, the layering trend embraces a relaxed and comfortable aesthetic, allowing us all to experiment with different proportions and textures.

Rich colours and textures: embrace the seasonal palette

The colour red will undoubtedly take centre stage during this season. From bold scarlet hues to deeper burgundy shades, incorporating red into your wardrobe will inject energy and confidence into your style choices. Plaids and corduroy continue their reign as timeless patterns in menswear. Whether it’s a cord blazer or a check overshirt, these patterns and textures add depth and visual interest to any outfit. Experiment with different colour combinations and scales to create unique looks.

Statement accessories: take your outfit from ordinary to extraordinary

Accessorising plays a crucial role in completing your look. Experiment with different textures and materials, such as silk pocket squares or patterned ties, to add personality and flair to your outfit. Don’t forget about the all-important footwear – go for smart sneakers or hiker-style boots for a look somewhere between casual and sophisticated. Winter gives you extra opportunities to switch up your style with neat knitted beanies and oversized wool scarves.

A new take on tailoring: update your formal looks for the colder months

The double-breasted suit will continue its resurgence in popularity. This tailored silhouette makes any outfit more refined. Whether it’s a structured blazer or an overcoat, double-breasted jackets are versatile pieces that can be dressed up or down according to the occasion. Deconstructed suits present a fresh take on traditional tailoring. With their relaxed silhouettes and unstructured designs, these suits offer both comfort and contemporary elegance. Selecting a deconstructed suit means you can maintain professionalism while easily embracing tailoring’s move into a more casual profile.

Totally tonal: keep it simple with a single-colour outfit

Tonal outfits are set to be a major trend, with cohesive looks that feature various shades of a single colour. This minimalist approach makes it easy to mix and match your options while always maintaining a put-together appearance. Camels, creams and neutral tones are one of the strongest tonal combinations of the season to layer up in. It’s part of the quiet luxury trend, which is all about being thoughtful with our style choices. A refined colour palette goes hand in hand with buying fewer, well-made pieces that you’ll wear long beyond the season.

The big woolly story: how to wear the best knitwear this season

Big knitwear offers a unique blend of comfort, style, and versatility. With its loose fit and relaxed silhouette, it delivers a cosy and relaxed look that’s just right in the colder seasons. One of the advantages of big knitwear is its ability to layer effortlessly or stand proudly on its own. You can pair it with a simple t-shirt or dress shirt for a casual yet put-together look. But many of the bold cable knit styles this season look great on their own too, making for a strong design statement. And even finer knitwear allows for creative styling options. From earthy tones to vibrant hues, there’s no shortage of options when it comes to finding men’s knitwear to suit your taste.

Amplified after-dark style: grab the opportunity to dress up

It used to be that we dressed smartly during the working week and were more relaxed on our days off. But with casual’s influence on the way we dress day-to-day over the last few years, it’s now the weekends that present our best opportunity to dress up. And evening style offers endless possibilities for creativity and self-expression. Whether is a bold print shirt tucked into tailored trousers in a very understated, louche way, or a tailored suit softened with a polo knit or smart wool overcoat, it’s the subtle shift in bringing texture and finer fabrics into the styling mix that will truly elevate your look. This season, let go of any self-doubt or hesitation and embrace the joy of dressing up again.
