What to wear to make the moment merrier

Festive feelings, this way.

MAKE THE KITCHEN FLOOR YOUR DANCE FLOOR

Words: C. Stewart

Celebrating’s definitely different this year. But rather than dwell on the things that aren’t happening, make any moment feel merrier by wearing things that lift your spirits.

It starts with how you dress. We strongly believe dressing up is good for your mental wellbeing. And there are actual studies that support this too, with the theory of enclothed cognition telling us we embody the meaning we attach to our clothes. It follows, then, that the clothes you associate with good times are also the clothes that will lift your spirits.

So, the remedy to a festive season of staying in? Go all out with your outfit instead.

Bring the dance floor to your kitchen floor with some feel-good tunes and a party-ready outfit – we challenge you not to feel festive in a plush velvet jacket.

Bringing out the boardgames? Match the nostalgic comfort of retro entertainment with a deep-toned rollneck jumper or this season’s trending cord shirt.

And if you’re having select few over for some festive food, everybody will appreciate a host that’s made the effort.

After a year like this year, wearing a suit will be a small change but a welcome one. It’s the little ways we show up this season that’ll make it all the merrier.

Bust a move – your tux can take it

If you’re planning to bust out some serious moves this party season, you’re going to need a tux that can go the distance.

Step forward: our Performance dress suit.

Cut in a tailored fit with sharp peak lapels, it’s made in breathable fabric with added stretch and Bond-worthy 37.5 technology that’s designed to regulate your body’s core temperature. In other words, it’ll keep you cool even when you’re setting the dance floor alight.

So, go on – bust your best moves out. Your tux can take it.

THE GOOD-TIMES GROOVE

Active particles embedded at fibre level respond to your body heat. As you work up a sweat they’ll spring into action to capture and release moisture vapour, regulating your ideal core temperature of 37.5 degrees so you can groove better, for longer. Let the good times roll.

THE TUXEDO TWIST

Technology derived from powerful natural sources, like volcanic minerals, absorbs the infrared energy your body naturally emits and speeds up moisture evaporation. The hotter you get, the harder it works to keep you cool. Lucky that, ’cause you’re on fire.

THE CHAMPAGNE SHIMMY

Breathable fabric actively stops humidity building up next to your skin, meaning you won’t overheat even as things hot up on the dance floor. So when everyone else is shedding their jackets, you’ll still look your sparkling best with your full look intact.

THE MIDNIGHT WHIP

When those around you are fading in the small hours of the night, odour-absorbing molecules and moisture-evaporating technology mean that you’ll still be as fresh as your moves. The party doesn’t stop until you do.

GET DANCE FLOOR READY

Suit up for the party

The end of the year is here, which can only mean one thing: it’s party season.
If any occasion calls for making a statement, it’s a party, so this is your ultimate call to suit up!

This party season, we were inspired by the spirit of night-time revelry. The kind of night that can take you anywhere and where everyone takes the opportunity to dress to the nines.

Shake up your look. Break out the tux. Rebel against the black tie norm in rich colours, textured jacquards and shimmering metallics.

Get ready.

It’s time to step out of the shadows.

BLUE MERMAN SHAWL SUIT

Woven from Italian fabric, this shimmering merman suit is about as bold as it gets. Its inky tones are a watery take on a camouflage print – but be warned, there’s no hiding in this statement suit.

VINTAGE BRONZE DRESS SUIT

Appearing on-trend burgundy from afar, this wool-blend suit is woven with a luxurious bronze undertone that’ll come to life in a moodily lit bar. For the man who’s got hidden depths.

SKINNY FIT BLACK TUX JACKET

Our no.1 bestseller year after year, proving that sometimes simple really is best. A slick, skinny fit and fashionable peak lapels update the classic tux jacket for the modern man.

BLACK AND WHITE GEO JACQUARD JACKET

Sometimes it really is as simple as black and white. In optic geometric jacquard fabric, this monochrome jacket will throw you in sharp contrast to the rest of the crowd.

WHITE DRESS JACKET

Because every party needs to play a classic. The traditional white tux is reworked in modern off-white and a sharp, slim fit that any Bond would give the nod.

NAVY JACQUARD DINNER SUIT

The eternally stylish dinner suit made party-ready in midnight blue and a diamond-textured jacquard cloth that’s designed to be seen up close. Lucky you.

The party starters

When the nights draw in and the lights go down, embrace the spirit of night-time revelry.

Party season is here and with it, your chance to shake off the 9-5 and revel in the promise of a great night out.

Who better to show off this season’s partywear than the men who get the party started? We tasked mixologists from top London bars to create a cocktail inspired by this season’s sharpest night-time looks.

The party starts here.

Mixologist: Adrien Russotto
Location: Henson’s Bar at Mimi’s Hotel Soho

“This white dress jacket is very elegant, very refined, and has lots of character. It said one thing to me: the Savoy American bar! I wanted to recreate one of the iconic bar’s most popular cocktails from its heyday in the 1930s – the ‘Atty’ – in a modern way. I reduced the absinth flavour to a gentle rinse and added some floral and nutty notes with a blend of Amontillado sherry and dry vermouth. Everything’s given a sharp finish with frozen FAIR. Quinoa Vodka. The result is a very elegant, gentlemanly drink – boozy and full of flavour.”

Mixologist: Phil Docherty
Location: Kurobuta Chelsea

“Once shaken, the Espresso Martini shares the jacket’s subtle, elegant aesthetic. Both are a stunning mix of light and dark with the Martini’s thick crema sitting upon a dark layer of fair trade coffee, while the jacket’s striking and bold with its unique dark pattern. Both are are a standout, both compliment each other perfectly.”

Mixologist: Adrien Russotto
Location: Henson’s Bar at Mimi’s Hotel Soho

“A twist on the classic Old Fashioned, this cocktail uses modern techniques and ingredients such as a butter fatwash in FAIR. Rum from Belize and young coconut water syrup. Its coppery tones reflect the jacket’s fabric – a rich, warming shade with unexpected depth and texture.”

Mixologist: Phil Docherty
Location: Kurobuta Chelsea

“The the Merman cocktail was inspired by the ocean-like blues and dark currents of this jacket. Both a new kind of masculine, the cocktail’s bold pink peppercorn and shiso garnish is a delightfully odd but modern mix for a gentleman – much like the jacket.”

Man of the hour

Your Pre-Match Routine

This is it. Prom night’s here. It’s time to get your game face on. An hour is more than enough time if you use it wisely. Consider this your pre-match routine.

Organise

Mints. Wallet. Phone. Get them all in one place. If you’re getting a lift to prom (or even bag the ultimate ride to prom), throw an umbrella in there. Rain will not – I repeat – will not wreck your look.

Clean up

Have a shower (obviously). Clean behind your ears (trust me: if you’re lucky enough to get someone else’s face close enough to yours, you’ll be glad you did). Brush your teeth (ditto). Sort your nails out. I’m not suggesting a full-on manicure (but by all means, feel free), just the bare minimum of short and, importantly, clean.

Groom

Whether you’ve reached the giddy heights of a full beard or are still in the facial furniture starting blocks, you need to groom it. Shave it, condition it, or sculpt in some elaborate design. Whatever floats your boat, mate, as long as it’s tidy.

Barnet

Get it in order. Hopefully you’ve booked in at the barber’s well before the last hour, but now’s not the time to experiment with a whole new look. A quick tidy up is essential and a bit of styling product never hurt anyone.

FRAGRANCE

Preferably not your dad’s and definitely not too much of it.

Suit up

It’s time to get decked out. Your suit and shirt are ironed, your shoes are polished and your accessories are absolute ballers. Put them all on. Now, check out the man in the mirror. Feel free to give him a few words of praise and get ready to receive a whole lot more.

Suit goals

5 men you really, really want to look like

Obviously it should be me at the top of this list, but since we’re here, these gents also know a thing or two about wearing a suit. Look and learn, lads:

Tom Hardy

You don’t see Hardy kicking about in a suit every day, but when he does suit up, he doesn’t muck about.

A 3-piece suit. Pattern. Killer accessories. Does he look scared? No.

He also looks like he’s just been roughed up a bit. Notice I said, “looks like”, gents. We’re here for a good time, alright?

John Boyega

Look, I appreciate the single black glove might be a bit much. The bold colour though? This is a man who’s not afraid to stand out in a crowd.

Roll into prom wearing something like this and I guarantee you’ll have everyone’s attention.

Riz Ahmed

A slick tux is the ultimate evening look for any self-respecting man. You know what’ll give you the edge, though? Being man enough to wear one in head-to-toe blue.

And if you really want to step up to the plate, make like Riz here and add in a coordinated blue bow tie.

Tinie Tempah

If there’s any time to bring out the big guns, lads, it’s prom. Take our friend Tinie here: absolutely bossing it in an embellished silver grey suit.

And as much as I’m an advocate for accessorising, a suit this sick needs nothing more than a plain black shirt and patent shoes so shiny you can admire your reflection in them. Trust me: you’re gonna want to.

Eddie Redmayne

Not feeling the spangles? Sticking to suave is a sure route to success. Fact.

Nothing says you’re the (gentle) man like knowing how to pull off the classics. Here’s Eddie showing how to play a blinder in a traditional double-breasted number.

Does it look like an old man’s suit? No – because he’s nailed the three P’s: proper fit, peak lapels and polished shoes. Got it? Good.

Absolute tunes

The Prom Father’s playlist

So, the big night is finally here. Your suit’s sorted. You’ve bossed your accessories. All that’s left to do is to put it all together and get pumped for prom night.

Any man worth his salt knows that getting ready is all part of the game plan. You think McGregor hits up the ring without getting in the zone? No.

Whether you’re getting the lads round or prepping solo before you hit prom, you’re going to need a banging playlist.

So here it is.

I think the phrase you’re looking for is
‘thank you’.

Choices, choices

How to look sick at prom

It’s prom time. You need to look sharp. In my opinion – and let’s face it, mine’s the only one that matters – you’ve got three options.

03

1. One Night Stand

Fancy some new threads but not sure you’re ready to lock it down? A cheeky little hire suit means you’ve got a fresh look for the night without dropping serious dollar.

And the morning after? Take it back. Job done.

2. Wife It

You’re a young guy, but trust me: if a good suit comes along, a real man knows when to commit. You’re going to need a suit on more occasions than prom. If it’s a keeper, buy it and you’ve got a sharp option that’ll do you for life.

Or at least until you grow out of it – #gains

3. TAILOR IT

Finally – and this is my personal preference – you can customise it.

What does that mean? It means you can go all out and get your suit exactly how you like it. Peak lapels? Done. Sick fabric? Done.

An ‘I Love My Mum’ monogram? Go for it, son.

Don’t cut corners

A step-by-step to a perfect pocket square

On-point. That’s what you’ll be if you get your pocket square game right. Why bother with a sh** hot suit if you’re going to let the side down with sloppy accessorising?

hanky-square

Boss a sharply folded pocket square and you’re the man who knows what he’s doing.

It’s not rocket science. But because I’m a generous guy, I’m going to let you in on a couple of folds that’ll sort the men from the boys on Prom Night.

The Two Point’s your classic technique. The Winged Puff is for when you’ve got the balls to step it up a notch.

One more thing: Matching’s for amateurs.

What you want is a pocket square that picks up the colours of your tie or bow tie and complements the colour of your shirt.

Extra points if you pull off a pattern clash.

The pep talk

Be prepared for prom

So, you’ve got the suit, you’ve made pre-Prom plans with the boys and you’re pumped for a night out. So how do you make an entrance? Unless you’ve got a sound technician at hand to blast out the Rocky soundtrack as you strut through the door, I’ve got a three-step route to success. Groom, prep, ride.

peptalk_1

Step 1. Groom

I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again. A slick hair cut is essential. Whether you wear yours long, short or shaved – book yourself in to the barbers ahead of the main event. Next, it’s time to pick a scent. Either stay safe with your staple, or try a new one in advance. I repeat, try this in advance. There’s nothing worse than a dodgy smell that lingers all night.

peptalk_2

Step 2. prep

Fail to prepare, prepare to fail. And nobody likes a failure, do they? Freshly ironed suit? Check. Polished shoes? Check – I’ve shown you how to do this, too. Keys, card, wallet, phone, chewing gum? Check. Game face? Check. Date? Who cares. You’re prepped and ready for Prom.

STEP 3. PULL (UP) IN STYLE

Whether you’re riding solo, with a date, or with your mates, we’ve got the ultimate Prom accessory up for grabs. Drumroll, please. A Rolls Royce Dawn. That’s right, you can pull up at Prom in a chauffeur driven Rolls Royce Dawn. What are you waiting for? Enter the competition, now.

Disclaimer: The Rolls Royce Dawn is just for one night. Cool credentials are for life.
