Why hire a suit?

Suit hire: sustainable, smart and simple.

HERE’S WHY HIRING A SUIT IS A GREAT OPTION

Words: L. Thorpe

There’s no denying that a well-fitted suit is a wardrobe classic. Whether it’s for a wedding, a business event or a special occasion, a suit can totally transform how you look and feel. If you don’t wear a suit that often, or you want to wear the latest styles, it can be a challenge  to keep up.

While owning a suit might seem like the obvious choice, there’s an alternative that offers plenty of advantages for those seeking.

4 reasons to think about suit hire

There’s nothing quite like an amazing suit to make you feel like a million dollars. But sometimes, suit hire can make much more sense than buying one. Whether you hate wearing the same outfit twice, or you don’t wear a suit enough to justify owning one, here are four reasons hiring a suit might make sense for you.

Cost effective

Let’s face it. If you wear a suit once a year at most, hiring rather than buying is a more cost-effective and sustainable option. With suit hire, you can achieve a polished look for that day or two when you might need to be a little less casual, all without breaking the bank.

Hiring a suit lets you access a wide range of well-tailored suits at a fraction of the cost of buying one, making sure you look your best for that important event without having to splash out.

Versatility and variety

One of the best things about suit hire is choice. You don’t have to commit to just one. From classic black tuxedos to contemporary slim-fit suits in all colours and patterns, the options are up to you. We take pride in curating suit hire collections for every taste and occasion. So, whether you’re attending a formal black-tie affair or a more relaxed summer wedding, you can find the perfect suit to match the tone and style of the event.

This means you can experiment with different styles and explore trends without long-term commitment. You’ll never show up at different events in the same outfit, and you don’t need to fill your wardrobe to achieve that.

Convenience and peace of mind

Planning for a special occasion can be stressful, with a million things to think about. Suit hire skips one of these potential headaches by offering a hassle-free solution. Rather than spending time shopping for a suit, you can browse through online or in-store collections, select your preferred style, and have it delivered to your doorstep or pick it up at a nearby location. Even better if you get measured up in store first, so there’s no doubt about what size to choose.

The entire process is designed to make your life easier, so you can focus on other important aspects of your event. Additionally, we take care of the cleaning and maintenance, saving you from the worries of dry cleaning and ensuring your suit is fresh and ready to wear. The way our suits are cleaned sterilises them completely so when you hire one, you don’t need to worry about cleaning it first.

Need some wedding planning tips? We’ve got you.

Sustainability

If you’re trying to be more environmentally conscious about how you shop, hiring a suit can be a sustainable choice – especially if you don’t wear them that often.

It stops unworn suits eventually ending up in landfill and can extend the life of that formalwear, since its worn as much as possible. And, the added bonus is you don’t need to compromise on style, fit or choice.

• WORDS: C. STEWART

Got yourself an invitation to Royal Ascot? The world’s most famous race meeting is an exhilarating day out but it does come with its own set of style rules that must be followed. Your luck’s in then – we’re here to help.

It’s tradition to follow the Royal Ascot dress code, but it will differ depending on the type of ticket you have. If you have access to Ascot’s Royal Enclosure then it’s a must to wear a morning suit. Our Royal Ascot hire collection has been designed to meet the dress code of this prestigious event, so you’re free to relax and enjoy yourself.

It’s best to have your hire booked by the end of May but if you get a last-minute ticket, still come and see us as we can sort your outfit as long as we have stock left.

If you’re in the grandstand, then you’re required to wear a suit with a shirt and tie. You’ll find that morning suits are still a really popular choice even in public enclosures, so feel free to go for one if you want to go all out. If you decide to stick with a suit, we recommend plumping for a three-piece and pairing it with a colourful silk tie and pocket square for a suitably grand outfit.

The history of suit hire

Everything you need to know about hiring a suit, this way.
Moss - suit hire

HERE’S HOW SUIT HIRE ALL BEGAN

Words: L. Thorpe

While the suit’s been synonymous with style ever since Beau Brummel – thought to be one of the first ever menswear “influencers” – the concept of suit hire is probably newer than you think.

Moss were one of the early pioneers of suit hire in the UK, making on-trend, sophisticated suits available to everyone. And we’re still doing so today – dressing individuals for all types of special occasions, be it galas, weddings or races.

Moss weddings - Man in a camel tan suit

When did suit hire start?

The idea of formal attire dates back centuries. In the 19th century, elevated suiting was only reserved for those who could afford it; that is, the upper classes who frequently attended banquets and balls. Tuxedos and tails were particularly popular up until men’s fashion saw the rise of the lounge suit, a more relaxed alternative to the formal tailcoat. As social events and occasions required different levels of formality, owning multiple suits became impractical for most individuals.

This gave rise to the idea of hiring suits for specific events, making fashion accessible and affordable.

The earliest known suit hire services started out in the early 20th century, when Moss Bros was born. This new service, run by brother Alfred and George Moss, catered to people who needed formal attire for weddings, events and other special occasions. The availability of suit hire gave people the opportunity to wear stylish, well-fitted suits without the expense of purchasing and maintaining them. It also helped to establish formal dress codes for different events.

Suit hire specialists

As the idea of suit hire gained popularity, businesses specialising in this service started to flourish. These suit hire specialists offered a wide range of suits in various styles, colours and sizes to accommodate different tastes and preferences.

Modern suit hire

Right now, suit hire’s as popular as ever, especially for formal events with a black tie dress code or special occasions like weddings and awards ceremonies. It’s easy to hire a suit for any type of event – if you need some ideas on what occasions may call for suit hire, read our piece on when you should hire a suit.

With Moss, you can hire a suit online and have it delivered to your door or any of our locations around the UK. You can also book an appointment and head into any of our stores to get measured and hire a suit that’s sized perfectly for you. Our suit experts can help you with any questions you might have and can show you samples, styles and fabrics to get something that works with your personal style. It also gives you the chance to try different looks on in real life if you’re not quite sure of what you’re after.

If you’re trying to suit up a group of people for an event, our group hire option takes the stress out of finding a suit that works for everyone. Whether you’re dressing your wedding party or want to match with your friends at prom, it really couldn’t be easier to hire a suit for whatever you’ve got planned.

If sustainability is important for you, renting a suit can be a more suitable option for wearing trending suit styles, extending both their lifecycle and your wardrobe choices. If you don’t wear suits that often, hire can be a more eco-conscious choice than buying new suits that eventually just sit in the wardrobe.

Four easy steps to hire a suit: suit hire guide

Easy does it.

FOUR STEPS TO HIRE A SUIT: SUIT HIRE GUIDE

EASY DOES IT
• WORDS: A. FOZZARD

As you gear up to the biggest event in your calendar, make your suit one less thing to think about on your to-do list.

You don’t need a personal assistant to hire a suit – it’s easy to sort out in just four steps, broken down here by Matthew, our hire expert at our Chester store. Let’s shrink that list now, shall we? Over to Matthew…

hire a suit

STEP 1: SELECT & STYLE

“As soon as you’ve set a date or received an invitation to a big bash, you can book an appointment to try on a few suits and decide what works for you. Most people choose their suits about six months in advance.

“If you’re keen for something quite on-trend, just ask us about the new styles that are coming in. We’ll help you try on similar suits that are already in stock, so you can see what might work for you.

“You don’t have to book a suit by the end of this appointment, but most people do. The fewer people there are with you, the easier it is to make a decision, so try to just bring along one other person, like your best mate, the bride or your dad. And come armed with lots of information about the wedding party. It’s much easier to get everything organised if we have a vague idea of body sizes and proportions. Ask lots of questions at this appointment – we’re here to help.”

hire a suit

STEP 2: GET THE RIGHT FIT

“It’s best to get everyone sized as soon as possible after you’ve chosen your suit. At the latest, you’ll need to size everyone no later than 60 days before the day your collection date. You don’t all need to be together – just book an appointment at the Moss store that suits each of you best. If someone can’t get to a store, we’ll need their height and these measurements: the largest width of the chest (that’s under the arms); shoulder width; waist; arm length; inside leg; and back (from the neck down to just below their bottom).

“Because they’re hired, not made to order, it’s about getting the best fit possible, which is usually very close. You’ll either try on the suit you’re booking or one very similar. It’s a pretty fun part of the process really – it really gets everyone excited for the big day.”

STEP 3: COLLECT YOUR SUIT

“You can collect your suit from us four days before you’re going to wear it, then drop it off two days after. That’s seven days that you have the suit in total.

“You decide which store you pick it up from, so it’s fine if you’re getting married out of town. Just tell us in advance, preferably at your sizing appointment, so we can make sure it’s all ready for you. And if you’re worried about tying your cravat, ask us to do it for you so you can just pop it over your head on the day.”

hire a suit

STEP 4: RETURN WITH EASE

“The question every man asks is ‘Do I need to get it dry-cleaned before I can return it?’ and the answer? No, you don’t. We’ll take care of that.

“You just need to bring everything back within two days after your function date. You can return it to any store, so even if you picked it up in Chester you can return it to Cambridge, for example. And you don’t need to tell us which one you’re taking it back to – just make sure you do it within the two days. We’ll explain all of this at your sizing appointment, but remember to ask about anything you’re unsure of. If you’re not bringing it back yourself, it’s worth nominating someone so you don’t have to worry about it.

“We offer Peace of Mind waiver on hire orders as standard. We always recommend you do take the waiver, so you can relax and focus on enjoying your day.”

AND A FINAL WORD

“Tell us everything. The more we know about what you’ve planned, the more we can help get everything organised for you.”

Venue booked, now hire your wedding suit

with Coco Wedding Venues

Words: E. Hla

Recently engaged? Congratulations! While I always advise taking a little time to enjoy the just-engaged bubble, it’s also very tempting to start the wedding planning ASAP – especially the venue search as locations can book up one to two years in advance… gulp.

But once you’ve found the dream spot to marry, it’s time to turn your attention to the outfits. For the bride, the wedding venue and the wedding dress go hand-in-hand and I don’t see why it should be any different for the groom. Wedding suit hire is a big deal that can save you time and money on your wedding day.

Getting the right wedding suit is important. So to help guide you through this style dilemma I’ve selected eight of my most-loved venues and matched them with the perfect suit. Pretty handy, right?

HOW TO MATCH YOUR WEDDING SUIT TO YOUR WEDDING VENUE

wedding suit hire

Upthorpe Wood, Suffolk

THE BOHO ONE

Upthorpe Wood is a magical venue set in a small private woodland, just off the beaten track in Suffolk. The team loves to encourage their couples to create a day that’s individual and unique with an easy, relaxed vibe. From getting wed under a canopy of trees, to dining in their Cartlodge and chatting around the fire until the wee hours, weddings at Upthorpe Wood are really quite special.

Beautifully wild, it’s just the spot for an outdoor boho celebration and what could be better than a bit of tweed to reflect this al-fresco vibe? For me, boho always airs on the side of being a little bit dark and moody, so I’ve opted for this herringbone tweed suit in an earthy, sage tone.

Tweed is a groom’s outfit trend that shows no signs of slowing down. But now in softer cuts and trending colours, it’s nothing like your Grandad’s boxy tweeds. To complement the laidback bohemian look of this location, pair yours with a cappuccino merino rollneck and suede brogues, or keep things classic with a white shirt, forest-green socks and sand-coloured loafers.

Stratton Court Barn, Oxfordshire

THE RUSTIC ONE

I’m crushing on this Donegal tweed lounge suit – a contemporary option that’ll look quite at home in rustic locations thanks to its textured weave and characterful flecks. Brown leather shoes match really well, as would a tonal knitted tie. So now we have the look we need a rustic venue, but which one?

Meet Stratton Court Barn – it’s found at Pool Farm, set amid rolling Oxfordshire countryside, yet only 10 minutes from Bicester. Once you enter the venue by the grand tree-lined drive, the peace and quiet of the countryside will surround you and make a seriously nice backdrop for your celebrations.

Originally built in 1870 and since thoughtfully refurbished, the barn has kept its rustic charm so it’s the perfect setting for an intimate, relaxed celebration.

wedding suit hire

St Giles House, Dorset

THE LUXE ONE

At this fine-art country house located in Dorset, you can marry surrounded by fireplaces and Old Master paintings or in their intimate and romantic grotto. It forms part of the Pleasure Grounds and was built in the early 18th century using shells brought back from the Caribbean. It’s perfect for couples looking to wed in a unique and magical setting.

This navy suit is my pick of an extra special look for your luxe wedding. Its tailored fit and matching waistcoat keep the look sleek and modern, but still classic. Pair its deep blue, 100% wool fabric with a white poplin shirt and bold-coloured silk accessories and you’ll fit right into the dramatic surroundings of St Giles House.

wedding suit hire

Chateau de Redon, France

THE DESTINATION ONE

Chateau de Redon is a romantic French venue in a relaxed and natural landscape. Set in a two-hectare private park with rare, century-old trees, it offers a secluded and exclusive location for your wedding. The Chateau was completely renovated in 2013 with modern design choices but with respect for all the authentic elements: century-old oak wooden floors, chimneys with majestic mirrors, handcrafted mouldings and intricate woodwork.

To complement such a location this stylish neutral lightweight suit is a cool but refined option. In a close-cut slim fit, it’ll give off an air of relaxed, understated charm that’s just right for this location. Plus the lightweight fabric is an obvious choice for destination weddings in warmer climes, as it’ll keep you cool. Style it with a printed shirt for laidback holiday vibes or keep things traditional with a crisp white shirt.

wedding suit hire

Mount Druid

THE VINTAGE ONE

Mount Druid in Ireland is a new addition to our collection of venues. Where vintage chic and the beauty of nature meet, we just had to pair this unique venue with this blue check suit. This sharp, slim-fit suit with a defined shoulder and tapering through the torso gives the classic Prince of Wales check a contemporary update.

Situated in the picturesque village of Castletown Geoghegan, County Westmeath, Mount Druid is an exquisite private wedding venue set in parkland of 100 acres. After getting married in their Tin Chapel, dance the night away in the converted Barn decorated with vintage chic trinkets and antique furniture.

wedding suit hire

The Hoxton Holborn, London

THE CITY ONE

The Hoxton Holborn is an intimate, relaxed hotel venue and just the space for a chic city wedding. Located in the centre of London, a stone’s throw from Covent Garden, this is one of the area’s most renowned hangouts with bars, restaurants and city views aplenty. Taking inspiration from the disco days of the 1970s The Hoxton Holborn’s event space features bold prints, velvet textures and a jaw-dropping terrazzo bar.

We’ve got the perfect match for this wow-factor venue. Our grey twill suit is super sophisticated, and it can be dressed up or down with accessories in a variety of colours and patterns. A dependable option for a packed wedding day, there’s a slight stretch to the wool-blend fabric so you’ll be comfortable all day. The neutral shade will go with any colour theme, too, and won’t leave you clashing with your show-stopping surroundings!

wedding suit hire

The Gallivant, Sussex

THE COASTAL ONE

We don’t think you could pick a more appropriate suit for a coastal wedding celebration than this light blue lounge suit. As well as being an easy option for your wedding by the sea, the shade of blue is nice and versatile. The addition of a waistcoat will elevate this adaptable suit from smart to something special.

So, which venue? Well, The Gallivant is a pretty epic venue on the raw coastline of Camber Sands in East Sussex. Weddings at this location always take place on an exclusive basis, meaning guests can enjoy the entire hotel and its 20 individually styled bedrooms for themselves. In the warmer months, big days flow naturally between the beach and the coastal-styled marquee. In the cooler months, the open log fire in the New England Room and the heated marquee create a beautiful Scandinavian/Hamptons-themed vibe.

wedding suit hire

Royal Botanic Gardens, London

THE CLASSIC ONE

I’ve saved my favourite venue for last – the incredible Royal Botanic Gardens in Kew, London. With floor-to-ceiling windows on three sides, the Nash Conservatory offers lots of natural daylight for your wedding celebrations. The Conservatory is the oldest of the 19th-century glasshouses at Kew and is of major historical and architectural importance, making it a unique venue for your big day. The style of this venue is super versatile, but it’s really the perfect backdrop for a classically elegant wedding.

Classic doesn’t necessarily mean traditional, and while tails would certainly suit this space, I urge you to go for a dinner suit instead. There’s something very dashing about a man in this particular attire and, believe me, your better half will go a little weak at the knees when they see you in this sleek black suit.

Cut in a frame-defining tailored fit, this suit’s wool-rich fabric and peak lapel detail is black-tie tailoring at its finest. Paired with high-shine dress shoes and a black satin bow tie, there’ll be no doubt you’re the man of the moment.

WHAT’S THE RIGHT WEDDING SUIT FOR YOU?

Whatever your wedding venue or theme, it’s important that you feel comfortable and confident in your wedding suit or groom outfit. A wedding day is naturally fairly long, so you want to feel like yourself from when you head down the aisle right through to when you hit the dancefloor later. Personal style is an important part of your wedding day, so you should choose your venue and complementary wedding outfits with that in mind – there are no rules!
