What is garment dyeing?

Lived-in, in a good way.

WHAT DOES GARMENT DYED MEAN?

Words: C. Stewart

Tailoring today is more relaxed than it’s ever been. It started with the Italians, masters of artful undoneness since way back when, and has only accelerated with 2020’s year of at-home dressing.

A big part of the relaxed look is fabrics. That kind of easy, lived-in look that makes an outfit feel all the more low-effort. Case in point? Garment-dyed shirts.

As it sounds, garment dyeing is when a piece of clothing is dyed after it has been made (i.e. as a whole garment) rather than it being made out of pre-dyed fabric. But why?

Instead of the pristine, uniform finish you’d get with fabric dyed by the roll, garment dyeing lets the dye settle in different amounts in different spots. So it might be deeper at the seams or around the collar, and a little more faded in the body, giving it that gently worn-in feel from the start.

A side-bonus of a garment being dyed after it’s been constructed is that it’s already been through a washing process by the time it gets to you, meaning it’s less likely to shrink when you wash it yourself later.

So that just-so, lived-in look lasts for longer. Win-win.

Three ways to wear a knitted hoodie

Casual kit has enjoyed a heyday in recent years (and this year more than ever), making its way into all our daily wardrobes. But a well-chosen casual item – or more specifically, given the title of this post, a knitted hoodie – can be more than something you sling on at home.

The beauty of a good basic like a knitted hoodie is its ability to ground a strong look. Here, worn with single-toned trousers, t-shirt and trainers, it does a stellar job of balancing a statement coat.

Alternatively, a zip-up hoodie makes smarter tailoring feel more relaxed for day-to-day dressing. And in a fine-gauge knit, it adds warmth without bulk so won’t disrupt the lines of your well-cut overcoat either.

Of course, it’d be foolish not to acknowledge you’ll probably wear your knitted hoodie at home too. Choose one in luxurious merino-rich yarns and pair with stretch chinos for a look that’s a notch up from joggers but just as comfy.

Micro wedding style

What to wear for your micro wedding

Words: C. Stewart

This year has forced lots of couples to give up on original wedding plans in favour of something much smaller. Maybe you’re planning a virtual mini-wedding now with all of your guests online, or maybe you’ll be able to gather a few of your nearest and dearest together in person, depending on the lockdown rules where you are. Either way, it’s probably not going to be quite what you imagined, so all the more reason to do it in an outfit you’ll feel great in.

Just because your micro wedding is smaller, doesn’t mean it should feel any less special. A three-piece tweed suit is made for winter wedding ceremonies and will feel suitably special compared to the WFH outfits you’ve been wearing all year.

If budget is top of mind, a tweed jacket will make a smart shirt and trousers you already own wedding-ready with the help of a few romantic-themed accessories. And you can restyle it with a printed shirt for next year’s social plans.

If your mini wedding is taking place virtually, then the usual outfit considerations like venue, time and weather don’t matter. Take advantage and wear whatever will make you feel happiest. Pale linen in December? Do it. A full-on evening tux in the middle of the day? It’s your day.

Even if your micro ceremony’s happening in the real world, you’ve had an absolute year of it so if wearing a sky-blue suit will put you in a sunnier frame of mind on your big (little) day, we’re right behind it.

Planning a minomony for now, with the wedding party later? A low-key look styled with a t-shirt will suit the mood at your scaled-down celebrations and will make the full wedding works of tails for you and your groomsmen feel all the more special next year.

If our stores are open (lockdown rules permitting), we’d love to see you safely there to sort your outfits. If not, you can still book your look for next year on our hire site.

Winter Collection Lookbook

New for now.

NEW FOR NOW

Words: C. Stewart

It’s been a rocky year. To say the least. One thing we’ve learned is that comfort’s more important than ever. But after months at home, we’ve also found that actually, yes, it is a good feeling to get dressed again. So what does comfort dressing look like now?

Fabric matters. Like tweed, the grandaddy of comfort, a British leisurewear classic we’ve respun for the times we’re living in. Or feel-good flannel we’ve woven with stretch and brushed inside and out for next-level comfort.

For days that could go anywhere (or only as far as your laptop), a simple styling notch-up goes a long way. Swap a t-shirt for a garment-washed shirt. Replace stretched-out joggers with stretch-rich trousers. Throw on an unstructured jacket for a last- minute meeting. The world’s changed – and we have too.

Presenting our winter collection.
