WANT THE PEAKY LOOK? YOU NEED A TWEED SUIT

Words: T. MacInnis

After almost two decades in the suit business, Moss is a leader in British tailoring. That’s why we’re the official outfitters for Peaky Blinders: The Rise, a new immersive experience based on the hit show. If you’re planning to attend the experience, you’re encouraged to dress the part. We can help with that.

Not only is tweed a classic suiting fabric, but it’s also the perfect way to capture that Peaky look thanks to its popularity in the ’20s. Even better, it’s been having a resurgence over the past few years, which means if you’ve got a great tweed suit for the show, you’ll want to keep wearing it, again and again. Read on to see four of our latest and greatest tweed suits.

peaky blinders tweed suit

Fig Donegal tweed

The fig tone of this Donegal-style tweed suit is one of our favourite colours for AW22. It’s punchy, but still wearable and versatile. Wear this one with its matching waistcoat and tan brogues when you’re headed to the show, and then swap in a padded gilet and white trainers for chillier days at the office.

Olive herringbone tweed

The cut of this tweed suit is a bit roomier, so you get an even more Peaky-appropriate look. The olive tone also calls on the ’20s, as does the herringbone finish. Again, wear this one with the matching waistcoat, and then rewear it for any autumn or winter weddings you have in your diary this year, and next year, too.

Checked tweed

Want something that really makes a statement? Our black, white, tobacco and blue checked suit fits the bill. You’ll stand out, but still look decade-appropriate. Yet again, the waistcoat is a must for Peaky Blinders: The Rise, but separate it out and wear the jacket with jeans for a more casual workday.

peaky blinders tweed suit

Sage tweed

This is one of our best-selling suits, and it’s not hard to see why. The sage green tone is different, but still wearable, and the cut is form-fitting but super comfortable. For Peaky, you’ll get a look Arthur Shelby would absolutely wear, and for the rest of the season, you’ll have a versatile suit that you can wear to the office, to a wedding, and anywhere in between.

Now you’ve got your Peaky tweed suit sorted, get your tickets for Peaky Blinders: The Rise right here. Then, keep on wearing that tweed suit for seasons to come.

Fabric focus: flannel

Flannel is back on the tailoring table.

FLANNEL IS BACK ON THE TAILORING TABLE

• WORDS: A. FOZZARD

The lumberjack favourite, this soft yet rugged and warm material is usually saved for checked casual shirts. But now flannel fabric has made its way into the world of tailoring too – and despite its brushed appearance, the suits are sharp. Here’s your need-to-know on flannel fabric and why you want a suit made out of it this season.

flannel fabric focus

WHAT IS FLANNEL MATERIAL?

It’s a fabric that goes through a brushing process to remove any lint and fibres, creating an incredibly soft finish. This brushed effect is why, when you run your hands over a flannel shirt or pair of pyjama bottoms, it has a fuzzed feel. It’s also why flannel is so warm because the down-like surface traps air.

Flannel can be made from wool, cotton or other man-made fibres like polyester. Despite a thick appearance, if it’s made from wool or cotton, it will be naturally breathable as well as warm. Its ‘furry’ finish doesn’t really reflect light so it’s got a contemporary matte finish and it also looks thick, giving it a ruggedness that errs on the casual side of smart.

flannel fabric

WHY SHOULD I WEAR FLANNEL?

Let’s start with its grassroots. Flannel is thought to originate in sixteenth-century Wales when it was used for its warmth. Jump forward a few hundred years to the Industrial Revolution and men across the pond were wearing it to keep warm while building the railways.  And if it’s warm enough for those guys, you can count on it to keep the chill out during your (presumably) less strenuous day-to-day. But that’s not all.

As a strong material, flannel takes well to being cut into a suit because it holds its shape. It’s also lightweight and malleable, not to mention soft, making it one of the more comfortable options. That’s a big plus point if you’ll be wearing it for hours on end at work or a wedding.

But the main reason it’s used today is style. As men are after more laidback looks, even in tailoring, casual materials like flannel are back on the tailoring table.

WHAT TO LOOK OUT FOR IN FLANNEL

Flannel suits come in all kinds of colours, patterns and fits, so you’ll easily find one that suits your style. But if you’re buying flannel, it’s likely you’re after one thing in particular: comfort.

If that’s the case, look for flannel fabric made in world-renowned mills like Vitale Barberis Canonico, which produces material from incredibly fine super 120s wool fibres that deliver superior softness. You might also prefer an unstructured suit – ours have a more relaxed fit with no shoulder pads and a lightweight half lining.

How to wear army green and grey this autumn

Here’s how to wear the military-inspired shade of green with classic autumn neutral, grey.

HERE’S HOW TO WEAR MILITARY-INSPIRED GREEN WITH CLASSIC AUTUMN NEUTRAL, GREY

Words: T. MacInnis

Army green, also known as khaki, is a classic earth tone for autumn. And the good news is, it goes with loads of other colours. Wear it with denim, wear it with black, wear it with lighter browns, and you’ll have a winning combo. But, one of our favourite and maybe slightly more unexpected pairings is army green and grey.

Whether you’ve opted for an army green suit for a day at the office, an overshirt for a weekend mini break or an every day piece of outerwear, pairing those pieces with grey will really make them pop. Read on for some of our favourite green-and-grey pairings to add to your autumn wardrobe.

khaki and grey outfit

Dress down a green suit with a grey turtleneck

An army green suit is a great choice for autumn, and a nice deviation from your usual navy or grey. It’s particularly good if you’re keen to wear a coloured suit but don’t want to go too bold.

You can go classic and pair your army green suit with a white shirt and a contrasting tie, of course. But, if you’re again looking for something a bit different, try wearing your suit with a charcoal merino roll-neck. This is a great look for a more casual city wedding, or for a day at the office.

grey trousers rollneck

Add a casual trouser to your autumn wardrobe

If you’ve found a favourite army green shirt or jumper, and you’re keen to wear it with something other than jeans, a pair of soft grey joggers could be the ticket. Just keep the rest of your outfit minimal and super neutral. Think, a pair of black boots or a navy gilet. Pieces like that will let your khaki green-and-grey combo stand out.

khaki green shirt grey trousers

Outerwear in army green

It’s always fun to choose something a bit different for your outerwear, because you’ll likely end up wearing it a few times a week. But, if you’re choosing a colour, you’ll want to make sure it’s still wearable with the rest of your wardrobe. Army green, of course, is a winner here. Not only does it look great with those grey joggers (see above), but you can layer an army green jacket over just about any jumper, save for other shades of brighter green.

We also love a good houndstooth pattern, and this one puts grey and green on the same shacket. Again, we love it with both a lighter grey or a similar charcoal to the one in the houndstooth.

Whichever army green and grey pieces you choose to add to your autumn wardrobe, make sure you can envision wearing them with pieces you already have. It’s a wearable combo, and we bet you’ll reach for it more often than you might have thought.

ALL YOUR NEW FAVOURITE COLOURS FOR AW ’22

Words: L. Thorpe

When it comes to men’s fashion, while some trends fade, there are some styles that will always be classics. For example, a tailored suit, a dress shirt and a classic T-shirt are all wardrobe essentials that’ll forever stay in style.

While wearing this season’s colour trends is important, there’s something else to consider. Wearing the right colours to complement your skin tone and your style are both important factors to make sure you’re feeling confident and comfortable.

Just like men’s fashion trends, different colours are in at different times of the year, usually split into autumn/winter (A/W) and spring/summer (S/S). That’s why you’ll see fashion shows named in this way and why you’ll see similar colour palettes across different shows and shops.

AW menswear colour trends

What colours are in this autumn and winter?

There are some key colours to keep an eye on when it comes to men’s fashion trends in A/W ’22. Neutrals always look good, and go with everything, so wearing your classic colour ways like greys, cream, white, black and brown never really goes out of style.

The reality is, you can wear whatever colour you want, and it’s important to wear the colours that you feel good in. If you want to keep it more focused on trends this autumn and winter, or you want to add a splash of on-trend colour in there, here are the colours you need to pick up:

  • Deep and bright blues. Whether you go for something dark. muted and moody or something bright, bold and electric, it’s official: men’s fashion has the blues (in a good way) this season. A blue suit can make a big difference from black or navy, especially if yuo go for subtle check patterns and pair it with a lightweight jumper. Prefer something a little more subtle? Try a blue tie for a nod to this trending colour.
  • Light baby blues. Opt for periwinkle pieces and light blue shades across your wardrobe for a seasonal look that’s ideal for cold, crisp winter mornings. It’s a great colour to match with black, white and grey. Add an easy pop of blue with the pale blue overshirt, or a super soft blue merino wool roll-neck jumper.
  • Nature-inspired greens. You’ll see a range of forest-toned hues in men’s clothing this season. Whether it’s fresh, light greens, muted mossy tones or rich blue-greens that evoke the sea, it’s official: greens are in. This colour works surprisingly well for trousers so whether you go for some green linen trousers or a pair of green chinos for a more laid back take on the green look.
  • All about orange. Rich, warm oranges are always autumnal and this year is no different with bright orange, muted tobacco shades, rich corals and mustard tones are all at the fashion forefront this season. A camel flannel gilet will keep you warm and on trend this season, while a peach pique polo shirt can be the perfect compromise if you don’t want to go too bold.

What other men’s fashion trends are going on?

Need some direction on what other A/W ’22 fashion trends for men are out there? We’ve got it covered. Double tailoring, leather and aviator jackets are all in fashion when it comes to outerwear. Think cosy, textured materials like faux fur, wool and corduroy. Sweater vests, gilets, shackets and prints are all in fashion for men this season.

Chunky knits are a winter classic, and they’re staying in fashion this season, along with casual boots, suede and cosy accessories like scarves and hats.

AW menswear colour trends

How to wear A/W fashion trends?

When it comes to knowing which colours suit you, sometimes the best way is to just try on some colours, especially ones that you wouldn’t usually choose. You might get a surprise.

Most people have warm or cool undertones to their skin, while some people are neutral. There are no rules, but in general people with cool undertones suit bright jewel tones, cool grey colours, white, blues and sea-greens. They also usually look better in silver jewellery and accessories.

People with warm undertones look good in earthy tones, orange, brown, off-white, yellow and rust-coloured tones. Gold is usually the metal of choice for people with warm undertones as it tends to be more flattering on their skin.

Neutral undertones look good in different shades but should check out brighter colours first as these might not always suit them. Teal, true red and darker purple tends to look good on everyone, whatever your skin’s undertones are.

Although trends can be a great way to upgrade your style, it’s important to stick with what suits you and what you feel the most comfortable and confident in. There’s no point in ticking off every trend if you’re never actually going to wear them.

Fred’s gift guide

Everything you need to kick off the gifting season, with a little inspo from Fred Sirieix.

KICK OFF GIFTING SEASON WITH A LITTLE HELP FROM FRED SIRIEIX

Words: T. MacInnis

Believe it or not, Christmas is right around the corner – in just five weeks, to be exact. If you’re a keener, you might’ve already started on your gift hunt. But, if you’re like us and it feels like summer just ended a minute ago, you might need a little help getting started.

Fred’s here to offer a hand with some favourite pieces from our autumn/winter collection. Whether you’re shopping for your dad, your partner, your brother or yourself, we’ve got an option to suit everyone, and every budget. Read on to find  the things that’ll win you serious points this December.

Essentials, with a twist

A belt might seem like a boring gift, but not this one. It’s an unexpected colour, the suede is super soft, and the best bit? It’s made right here in the UK. This belt hits that sweet spot between functional and special, which means they’ll wear it for years to come.

Another unexpected take on a classic is this shirt. It might look like a fairly standard one from far away, but get up close and you’ll see that it’s made with a brushed cotton so it’s incredibly soft. They’ll wear this one to the office on those more laid back days, or at the weekend under a jumper. Regardless, they’ll always be comfy in this shirt, and what’s a better gift than comfort?

The cosiest accessories

Accessories are always a sure-fire win when it comes to gifting. We recommend paying attention to what your giftee tends to wear to choose the right ones. Do they tend to go for brighter colours, or more neutrals? Do they like texture or something more simple? If you make a choice based on that, you’ll guarantee that they’ll both like and wear what you buy.

Our wool-cashmere beanie (coming soon) is a great choice for just about anyone on your list, particularly if they wear darker-coloured outwear in the winter. That said, it also looks great with our cable roll-neck jumper – another classic gift. If you’ve got someone on your list who likes colour, but seems apprehensive to take it on, opt for a smaller, less visible accessory like a pair of deep red socks.

A more comfortable commute

No one likes a hectic commute, and when the weather is cold and dreary, it only makes things worse. Help minimise that pain with a couple accessories for someone special on your list. Our new saffiano-look backpack is sleek and functional, ideal for carrying everything they need for a day at the office, or even a weekend away. Then, for a bit of extra warmth, get them a wool-cashmere blend scarf (also coming soon).

The most important part of gifting, in our opinion, is to never overthink it. Focus on what you know someone will use, and if you really love it, chances are they will, too. But, if you’re really unsure, the best choice is giving them choice with a Moss Box subscription. It’s the gift that’ll keep on giving for months to come. Happy Christmas!

How to wear navy, fig, tobacco and white this season

Here’s how to wear another autumn colour palette: tobacco, navy, fig and white.

HERE’S HOW TO WEAR THIS UNEXPECTED AUTUMN COLOUR PALETTE

Words: T. MacInnis

Unlike spring and summer, it can be hard to strike the right balance when it comes to colour in autumn. If it’s a bit too bright, it’ll feel too summery, but too dark can also feel a bit dreary on a rainy day. Enter your new favourite colour palette: fig and navy, paired with neutral white and warm tobacco.

Whether you’re headed to a wedding, to the office, or to the pub, there are so many ways to wear any combination of these autumn-ready hues. Keep reading to find out how to work them into your wardrobe, and shop some of our favourite fig, navy, white and tobacco pieces.

autumn colour

Tobacco and navy… or white

Navy is a staple colour for autumn, mostly because it’s a bit softer than black and it goes with basically everything. Another thing it has over black? It pairs far better with all shades of brown, including tobacco. See above in our merino-blend polo worn with flannel joggers. The polo has a vintage feel, but the joggers make it modern.

If you really love tobacco, why not invest in a timeless double-breasted tobacco suit? It’s an unexpected alternative to your usual neutrals of either grey or taupe, and each piece will look great when you separate them. Pair it with a crisp white shirt for an autumn wedding, or with a merino roll neck for an evening out. Tobacco’s versatility might surprise you, but we think you should embrace it.

autumn colour

Staple pieces in fig, accessories in tobacco

A shade of red might not feel like it has staple potential, but fig is different. This deep, warm hue looks good with every skin tone, and it also pairs well with pretty much any other colour outside of the red family. We love it with (you guessed it) white and tobacco.

Above, our fig flannel joggers are finished off with a white merino roll neck and our white chunky trainers. It’s an ideal outfit if your office is a more relaxed environment, or even if you’re working from home. Opting for an overshirt in fig is also a great way to work the hue into your autumn wardrobe. If you want to offset that fig with something more neutral, choosing accessories in tobacco, like this made-in-England suede belt, can achieve that effortlessly.

autumn colour

Outerwear in navy

Again, another instance where navy makes a great alternative to black: autumn coats. A trench like this one is a more subtle move into cooler temperatures, and of course, it looks excellent with a tobacco roll-neck jumper underneath. If you’re looking for something a bit heavier, try a navy peacoat. Or, if you want even more layering potential, a navy gilet.

The dawn of a new season is a great time to take on a colour palette you haven’t tried before. Whether you throw yourself into it and go head-to-toe tobacco, or opt for just an accessory, one or two items in a new hue can really refresh your wardrobe. Just make sure that new piece works with at least three things you already have, and make sure you love it. Then, you’ll wear it all the time, year after year.

WEAR ONE OF OUR FAVOURITE COLOUR PALETTES TO THIS SEASON’S WEDDINGS

Words: T. MacInnis

When it comes to an autumn wedding, whether you’re the groom or a guest, you might think “classic” autumnal colours are your only option. But if you’re not a fan of earthy tones like brown, green or deep red, we have good news for you: blue is back for autumn.

While blue is of course a super popular spring/summer colour, it doesn’t mean you can’t keep wearing it through autumn, particularly to an occasion that calls for a suit, like a wedding. Below, we run through a few ways to wear light blue and navy to an autumn wedding, accented with different tones of blue and finished off with white. So if you’re getting married, or if you’re RSVPing to loads of weddings this season, let this be a little outfit inspiration.

autumn wedding suit

Blue on blue on blue

Blue is one of those colours that typically looks good on everyone. So if you’re game to try head-to-toe blue, you’ll probably have a winning look on your hands. Also, each element of your outfit will be super wearable with all the other pieces you have in your wardrobe.

Opting for a blue-on-blue checked suit is a bolder option, so pair it with a pale blue shirt and minimal accessories to let that suit take centre stage. Or, if you’re going to a more formal wedding (or you’re the groom), opt for a pale blue three-piece suit, and then continue the tonal theme with a blue-and-white printed tie and a grey-blue shirt. Mixing different shades of blue with different undertones can add a little visual interest your all-blue look.

How to wear blue, navy and white to an autumn wedding

Make your blue casual

If you’re going to a city wedding, or you just want to look a bit more pared back, think about switching your usual dress shirt out for knitwear. You’ll still look polished, but you’ll stand out from the crowd. This is a great option if you know the temperatures are going to be cooler, too.

Try layering one of our merino zip-neck jumpers underneath a classic navy suit. The pairing of the knit and the more formal suit makes for a nice contrast, and you’ll absolutely wear all of these pieces again. Pair the zip-neck jumper with joggers for work, and wear the suit to your next big interview.

How to wear blue, navy and white to an autumn wedding

Go classic and formal at the next autumn wedding

Particularly for a wedding, nothing says autumn like tweed. This navy blue Donegal tweed suit has soft flecks of a brighter blue that give it depth, which makes it a perfect choice for a groom or a groomsman. Adding in the matching waistcoat elevates the look even further.

In keeping with this classic choice for an autumn wedding, we suggest layering a classic white shirt underneath. It’s another piece you’ll wear again, and something you might already have in your wardrobe.

Again, blue is a universally-flattering colour, and it’s often the first one people reach for when they deviate from a black or grey suit. But dressing yours up with the suggestions above can make it a bit more special. And you owe it to the couple (or your soon-to-be spouse) to look extra special at a wedding.

Introducing our AW22 Esquire editor’s pick collection

Here are the Esquire editor’s favourite pieces for autumn.

SHOP THE ESQUIRE EDITOR’S FAVOURITE PIECES FROM OUR AW22 COLLECTION

Words: T. MacInnis

This season, we’re excited to announce the editor at Esquire magazine has hand picked some of their favourite pieces from our AW 22 collection. From a checked suit to a boucle overcoat to worker joggers, this edit will help you prep your wardrobe for autumn.

Hitting that mix of tradition and modernity, “casual has seldom looked so smart, and dressing to impress has rarely felt so effortless,” say the Esquire editors. Read on to see the full collection and find out what’s going to make you love these pieces, too.

The perfect autumn suit

If you’re looking for a printed suit for an autumn wedding, or just a chillier day at the office, this boucle one is ideal. There’s no better print for this season than a check, and blue is a more exciting choice than your traditional grey or black check. But don’t let that brighter hue fool you. It’s just as versatile and wearable, and can be dressed down with a pair of trainers or up with the matching waistcoat.

Top layers

If cosiness is your top priority when looking for a winter coat, we’re with you. The brushed boucle finish on this one is so soft and warm, you’ll never want to take it off. But, when you do, make sure your next layer adds a bit of contrast, both in texture and colour. This ecru knit fits the bill, and its zip neck will add a bit of visual interest underneath the coat.

Mix and match

We’re loving cord this season, especially when it comes in an unexpected colour like this greyed-out teal. The silhouette of this jacket is also unexpected, thanks to the blend of traditional tailoring from the double-breasted closure and the more relaxed feel of the cord. Pair it with contrasting camel joggers for a creative twist on your usual suiting.

Softer layers

Gear up for those warmer autumn days with lighter layers in the form of a blazer and a merino zip-neck jumper. You’ll look just as smart with the blazer off or on, thanks to the more form-fitting cut of the jumper. Then, you can pair the blazer with its matching trousers for an all-season suit.

Form meets function

The ideal boot for autumn is one that looks good and holds up in unpredictable weather. This boot meets both those criteria, with its trendy tread sole and sturdy leather construction. Same goes for the light grey safari shirt. Not only does it look smart, with its soft flecks and black buttons, but it’s got serious layering potential.

The best pieces for autumn are the ones you know you’ll wear well into winter. That way, you’ll get more for your investment. Each piece in our Esquire editor’s pick collection is ready for most (if not all) seasons, and we’re excited to see how you make it your own.

– Fred

Read on for all of Fred’s favourite looks, and a few tips for styling this season.

Autumn-ready layers

When it comes to layering, nothing works harder in transitional seasons than a gilet. This autumn/winter, our navy gilet is padded enough for just the right amount of added warmth, and lightweight enough to wear under or over pretty much anything. For a smart-casual look, try styling it underneath a checked suit, and for those off-duty days, wear it over a merino roll-neck jumper in a tonal hue.

Quality, wear-everywhere knitwear

Knitwear is one of the best things about colder months. It’s cosy, versatile, and adding just one or two new pieces to last year’s wardrobe can instantly update it. This navy polo neck, made with merino wool, is one we know you’ll reach for again and again. Not only is it super soft and lightweight, but it’ll keep up with you throughout the week. Wear it on its own with a pair of chinos, or layer it under a flannel blazer for another smart-casual look.

Autumn weekend warriors

With the best autumn pieces, you’ll get that ideal combo of form and function, so you’ll both look and feel great. That means you can put together loads of outfits that are perfect for whatever you’ve got on at the weekend. Our chunky cable roll-neck jumper is a great example. It’s made with temperature-regulating lambswool blended with shape-retaining fibres, so it’ll bounce back, season after season. Then, this fig overshirt and jogger set is like elevated, autumn-ready sweats. Reach for it when you’re headed somewhere laid back, like a Sunday roast or a game night.

Whatever pieces you decide to add to your wardrobe this fall, follow Fred’s lead and choose them for both quality and versatility. Hitting both those marks means you’ll want to wear them again and again, and not just this year.
