Shacket vs overshirt – and how to wear yours

Confused? Don’t be, answers this way.

SHACKET VS. OVERSHIRT – WHAT’S THE DEAL?

Words: C. Stewart

You’ll have seen the word a lot this season: shacket. But what exactly is it? What makes it different from an overshirt? And how are you supposed to wear it? Answers here.

Moss - herringbone linen shacket

What’s a shacket, then?

A shacket fuses the best of two staples – it wears like a shirt but is slightly thicker, just enough to keep you warm like a jacket.

If it’s not already, it’ll be one of the hardest-working items in your wardrobe. You’ll easily trade a coat in for one when it’s cool but not cold, or use it as a layer to build up your look when you need extra warmth.

What’s the difference between a shacket and an overshirt?

We can’t go any further here without ironing this out: in truth, shackets and overshirts are widely interchangeable by name and you’ll find either word used for the same sort of styles by different brands.

Our take is that a shacket leans more on the jacket end of the scale with thicker fabrics, a weightier hand-feel and more jacket-like details. Whereas an overshirt feels much more like a shirt but has a more relaxed fit than your usual button-up so you can layer it over other pieces.

Whichever term you land on, they’ve both got a utilitarian feel that’ll make a smart outfit feel more casual and smarten up a casual look. Magic.

Types of shackets and overshirts

It won’t surprise you that shackets and overshirts come in all sorts of forms. From lightweight and layerable to weighty and warm, there’s a style to cover all of your outerwear needs.

A linen shacket is a breathable take on the look that will make a nice contrast worn over a cotton tee and imply you’ve put some thought into your outfit. Our khaki linen safari shacket is a great option when the weather isn’t quite warm enough for short sleeves – its delavé texture and patch pockets add a level of interest to a relaxed look. Pack it with your holiday gear as an evening layer for when it gets a bit breezy.

A relaxed overshirt offers the sort of ease of wear that means you can throw it on and go live your life. Our chore overshirt is crafted from a soft stretch cotton that’s comfortable and easily smartens up a casual outfit. The textured fabric offers a bit of dimension and works just as well over a boxy t-shirt as it does under a parka. And, as it’s designed like a shirt, it can be worn like one too. Combine with jeans, chinos or joggers and finish with a sporty trainer for an easy weekend look.

Cord overshirts are particularly great for layering – lighter than shackets but weightier than a standard overshirt, they can be styled in lots of ways depending on the season. Throw over t-shirts or thick knits and you’ll have a solid weekend outfit whatever the weather.

And finally, a patterned overshirt is a men’s casual staple that adds a shot of interest to your lineup. Our take is made from a textured boucle cotton, with a little stretch for extra comfort. With a tailored fit that offers a more refined profile, it’s still comfortable enough for breezy evening strolls. Create a summery, tonal look by pairing with a relaxed trouser and a knitted polo.

How to style your shacket

The simple answer? Wear it with just about anything. You’ll find a shacket or overshirt as versatile as your favourite denim – and it’ll go with pretty much anything your jeans do too.

For the most layering potential, look for a boxier fit and a longer line than your standard shirt (or, tuck your shirt in for extra smart points). Wear yours to wrap a casual look up into something that bit more refined, like with a skipper polo and a pair of linen joggers for an easy weekend outfit. Or try an overshirt with a pair of tailored trousers and leather loafers for a hybrid smart/casual office look.

If it hasn’t done enough to earn its spot in your wardrobe already, know you can use a shacket as a light layer over a jumper or T-shirt in spring and autumn. Then, when it’s properly cold, use a mid-weight overshirt as an extra layer to trap air between a knitted jumper and your winter coat.

Moss - off white worker chino

Worker chinos

The chino even non-chino guys can get behind, the worker chino is designed for casual comfort. The hook and bar closure keeps things smart, while the elasticated waistband allows for extra room when you need it. Crafted from organic cotton with added stretch, they’re truly a transeasonal investment, pairing well with crew neck jumpers for the cooler months and cotton t-shirts for warmer weather.

SHOP ALL CHINOS

Moss - slim fit dusty pink chinos

Stretch chinos

Slightly smarter than our worker chinos, our stretch chinos come in two fits slim and tailored. While the slim fit is cut from a slightly heavier cloth, the tailored fit comes in a lighter, softer cotton with a bit more room around the seat. Coming in a wide selection of colours, you won’t be stumped for outfit choices here – pair with anything from white t-shirts to sky blue Oxfords.

Moss - khaki linen worker jogger

Joggers

Comfort doesn’t get better than this. An elevated take on the classic jogger, these casual trousers are perfect for more relaxed plans (or no plans at all). That doesn’t mean you can’t wear them to the office, though – with a pleated front and tapered leg, they look just as good with a casual tee as they do with an unstructured jacket. An elasticated waistband, however, puts comfort at the forefront. As for the fabric, we’ve cut these from a lightweight linen cloth for an airy feel during the summer months.

Moss - ecru stripe beach pants

Beach trousers

A new style for SS24, the beach trouser is our most relaxed fit yet. The leg still tapers down from the waist maintaining a level of smart, but the wider base allows for a bit more movement. These will be your go-to trouser for warm weather weekends – wear them higher on the waist with a tucked-in Cuban, or lower them slightly for a laid-back feel. The elasticated waist and external drawcord will keep you comfy all day long.

Moss - light taupe cargo trousers

Cargo trousers

Another new addition to the season, our cargo trousers are a tailored version of the classic cargo style. We’ve crafted ours from a soft, stretchy fabric that drapes well,  and the back of the waistband is elasticated for comfort. As they’re cut on a similar block to our suit trousers they still feel refined, but a little bit more room through the seat and classic cargo patch pockets add a more relaxed element.

Fabric focus: designed in Japan

SOFT TAILORING FABRICS SOURCED FROM TAKISADA, JAPAN

Words: C. Saramowicz

Japan is often famed for its food, culture and lush landscapes, but the country is renowned for its fabrics, too. From silky satin kimonos to hand-printed cotton haori jackets, Japan has long been producing fabrics of quality and artistic merit. Alongside this, Japanese techniques are often innovative and tactical – think blending wool with linen to create a lightweight, moisture-wicking jacket like our charcoal shacket – combining century-old knowledge with modern ways of working with fabric.

In our SS24 collection, we’ve worked with a range of Japanese fabrics that perfectly represent our season aesthetic. See below to learn more about why we chose cloths from Takisada, fabric specialists based right in the heart of Japan’s textile province.

Founded in 1864 and based in Bishu, a town renowned for its wool production, Takisada is known for its innovative fabric blends and dying expertise. A true testament to centuries of Japanese textile tradition, the fabric specialists are the very essence of Japanese craftsmanship, weaving century-old knowledge and history into every piece of fabric.

Takisada work with a wealth of different cloths, weights and textures, and this season we focused on fabrics that offer the casual comfort and breathability that is ideal for the warmer months.

Take our navy wool-blend shacket, for example. Interesting textures are a hallmark of Japanese fabrics, and we’ve applied its distinctive dry, soft feel to our lightly tailored set for refined comfort on warm days. Pair it with the matching trousers, or layer over a simple tee for a cohesive feel.

Moss - dark taupe technical overshirt

Taking it down a notch, our dark taupe technical jacket is the perfect airy transeasonal piece. Crafted from a light cloth with a crisp hand-feel and added technical stretch, it makes for a streamlined casual layer that will see you through whatever casual weekend plans you’ve made. We’ve matched its clean lines with minimalist yet functional details like tonal zippers and poppers.

Moss - sage striped seersucker set

For balmy days at home or hot vacations abroad, warm summers mean Japan is known for featherweight textiles like seersucker. In Takisada’s hands, a papery, puckered texture and wide, sage stripes bring this summer classic into a modern light. Pair the top and bottoms for a standout look that will turn heads, or wear as separates with light, neutral toned pieces.

Spotlight on: relaxed fit suits

Cut on our roomiest block for an eased-up take on tailoring.

DESIGNED FOR ROOMIER, EASYGOING WEAR

Words: C. Saramowicz

The last few years have seen tailoring move into more of a relaxed direction, with softer, roomier silhouettes gaining popularity. This new, more comfortable take allows you to take the suit out of the office and into more casual settings, granting room for more versatility around styling. Think open necked shirts, roll neck jumpers and patterned tees (though, a classic Oxford and knitted tie works a treat too).

See below for our take on the relaxed suit trend.

SHOP RELAXED FIT SUITS

Moss - relaxed fit mauve flannel double breasted suit

We’ve taken the classic double-breasted suit and loosened it up a bit, creating a slouchier profile with slightly dropped shoulders and a boxier fit through the torso. The trousers have been widened slightly, allowing for a straight drop that falls to puddle on your shoes. It’s our roomiest fit, cut generously for an overall looser look.

That doesn’t mean it can’t look smart, though – though relaxed fit suits are great for weekend wear, they can easily be styled for the office too. Create an overall laid-back aesthetic by combining with a Cuban collar and a pair of white trainers, or smarten it up by pairing with a striped linen shirt and polished shoes.

It’s a modern, easy take on the regular fit, so the styling options are truly endless.

Moss - relaxed fit copper flannel double breasted suit

Our relaxed fit suits come in three trending tones – port, copper and dusty pink. From chilled summer weddings to warm weekends with friends, they’ll be your go-to this season.
