HERE’S WHAT TO WEAR TO WEDDINGS, WORK AND EVERYTHING IN BETWEEN

Words: L. Thorpe

Looking for a guide on what to wear for (almost) every occasion? Our ideas for how to dress in any situation will help you to make the most of your look, wherever you’re headed. It’s true that sometimes rules are made to be broken, but this guide will help give you some ideas for maximum style with minimum effort.

Moss - regular fit oatmeal linen suit

What to wear to a wedding

First things first; if you’re a wedding guest, it’s a good idea to check what the dress code is (if there is one). It’s normally written on the invite and will give you a bit of direction for your outfit. The second thing to check is what the wedding party are wearing. While it’s not the worst thing in the world if you’re in a similar colour to the groomsmen, you might want to skip any confusion.

With a wedding, a 2-piece suit is usually a safe choice when the dress code is more casual, or a 3-piece suit for when it’s more formal. If you want to keep it classic, go for neutral colours like stone and beige or brown and add some colour with a patterned tie and pocket square. Smart shoes are the way forward at a wedding too – remember those photos stick around for a long time! A double Monk or Oxford shoe are a classic choice, while a chunky loafer is a more contemporary option.

Heading to a summer wedding? A linen lounge suit is great for staying cool and smart. Style yours with a tonal knitted tie or lose it completely for a more relaxed feel. You can also try a lightweight flannel, or a tweed in a summery shade to add some texture. Weddings are a great opportunity to try a style you wouldn’t normally wear, like a pastel colour or a more out-there print. It’s important to feel confident, whatever you’re wearing and wherever you’re going.

Our wedding dress code guide goes into even more detail about what you need to wear to a wedding.

What to wear to an interview

The way we dress for work has changed. While a few offices are still going for a full suit and tie look, most places have really relaxed their dress code. Despite this, it’s usually best for an interview to err on the (smarter) side of caution. You might not plan on wearing a suit or formal trousers every day, but that doesn’t mean you can’t make the right impression at your interview by dressing up a little.

An unstructured jacket, such as our Italian-made light grey pinstripe, combined with contrasting trousers or a more relaxed suit shape can help take the formal edge off your interview outfit. For somewhere a bit more corporate, try a neutral toned wool suit with added stretch such as our blue check performance suit, with a smart open-collar shirt.

Make sure to do a bit of research into the company culture and dress code before you head to your interview. Think about the type of role you’re interviewing for too – it’s not always the case, but the more senior the role the more you might be expected to dress smartly. Get more info on what to wear to nail that interview in our four interviews, four looks guide.

Moss - tobacco cord overshirt

What to wear for work?

As mentioned, the working wardrobe has changed over the last few years. Though there’s been a clear move to hybrid working and working from home, many people are still heading out for meetings, events and office days. So what should you wear for work now?

Like an interview, it’ll depend on the workplace and their dress code, but you can take your lead from your colleagues and the type of work you do. It might mean for days that you’re in the office with meetings and clients, you’re dressed more formally in a two-piece suit with a shirt and tie, or maybe styled down a touch with a zip knit.

But when you’re heading in for an informal meeting you can wear what you want. We suggest an tee paired with a shacket or overshirt, like our tobacco cord overshirt – both add a smart touch to a casual look. Then, add some chinos and a chunky sole shoe or a smart trainer. When it’s hot, try a relaxed but tailored linen twin-set with a white t-shirt.

Moss - slim fit burgundy velvet jacket

What to wear for a black tie event?

So, you’ve been invited to a black tie event but you’re not sure what to wear. First off, don’t stress – it’s actually easier than dressing for some other types of events as the dress code is really clear. For men, black tie usually means a black tuxedo or dinner jacket and trousers worn with a dress shirt, cufflinks, bow tie and patent leather shoes. It’s really that simple.

However, you can still get more creative with black tie too. Adding a bit of colour, like a midnight blue suit or a colourful velvet jacket like our burgundy take, is one way to show some of your personality so you don’t blend in with the crowd. You can also go a bit more relaxed with a double-breasted tuxedo jacket in a more casual fabric, or by adding a normal tie or shoes that work better for your style. While this isn’t black tie, strictly speaking, you can judge if it’ll be appropriate by what kind of event it is and what other people will be wearing.

Moss - taupe heavyweight crew neck t-shirt

What to wear on holiday

The world is (quite literally) your oyster when it comes to what to wear on holiday. Of course, it all depends on where you’re going, who you’re going with and how long you’re going for. You also need to consider what you’re planning to do when you get there; in general, if you’re heading somewhere hot you can’t go wrong with a selection of T-shirts, polo shirts, shorts, trainers, some short sleeve shirts and linen trousers. Having different weights of t-shirt won’t hurt either – depending on your destination, a heavyweight tee like our taupe crew neck can be worn on its own or layered under overshirts if it’s a little cooler.

For easy summer style, layer a cuban over a t-shirt or vest and add some relaxed linen shorts. Or try a co-ord set for a look that you can mix and match or wear together, for a simple fit that looks anything but. Another way to lift your holiday look is by trying out different textures and fabrics – towelling, pique, and linen all look amazing for summer. A linen suit or a linen shirt with white chinos make smart summer evening looks, and look all the better a little bit crumpled which makes them suitcase friendly too.

What to wear on a date

Whether it’s a first date or date night with your partner, what you wear should be led by where you’re heading and what you’re doing. For a dinner date, try a double-breasted jacket over a light knit with tailored trousers and chunky loafers. For a more casual date, denim always works – try a straight-leg pair with a skipper-collar jumper or a printed shirt. Or go for a layered look by pairing an overshirt , like our light grey knitted overshirt, with a good quality T-shirt and a pair of chinos.

If you’re doing something more active (mini golf, perhaps?), you want to feel comfy but still look put together. This is where smart joggers come into it. The key is how you wear them and what you wear them with. Choosing smarter pieces or more structured tops to go with drawstring trousers takes it from sports day to date night. An unstructured jacket, rollneck jumper or t-shirt-and-open-shirt combo all look great with this relaxed fit.

Stuck for ideas with an in-between venue in mind? You can always layer an overshirt or blazer with your outfit if you’re not sure of the vibe.

If you need some date ideas and some style tips for each date, then read our guide.

Moss - off white and black abstract printed shirt

What to wear for a night out?

A night out can be a ton of different things, so first of all check out where you’re going and if there’s a dress code. You don’t want to be the only one in trainers, watching your mates get ushered through the entrance while you wait outside. A smarter jacket over a shirt with a good pair of trousers usually works pretty well if you’re heading somewhere smarter.

If you want to add some colour to your outfit, a night out’s the good time to try out some prints. Paisley, stripes and checks all look good for a night out. A printed shirt, like our black and white abstract shirt, looks great with a heavier-weight pair of trousers when it’s cooler, or with linen shorts in summer. Throw an unstructured jacket on top if you need to elevate the look a bit.

Clubs or bars have slightly less formal dress codes (depending on where it is of course), so you can get away with a premium t-shirt or a short sleeve shirt and trousers. An Oxford shirt is also a great smart-casual hybrid and is easy to style with a pair of chinos or denim. In colder weather, layering is your friend. Think knitwear, classic coats, trousers and boots.

Our party style guide has some more ideas for when you’re heading out.

What is smart casual?

Ah, the dreaded smart casual. What does it actually mean? It used to mean a more casual suit, so a blend of formal and (slightly more) laid back, though that’s changed a bit now. Essentially,  you can wear what you want as long as it isn’t fully relaxed (think joggers and hoodies) or too buttoned up like a suit and tie.

WHAT TO WEAR AND WHAT TO DO IN MANCHESTER

Words: L. Thorpe

Heard great things about Manchester and want to check out what’s going on, where to head and what to wear? Us too. We’re about to open our second-biggest Moss store right in the heart of Manchester’s city centre.

So whether you’re looking for suits in Manchester, or more casual pieces that’ll take you from day to night, we’re ready to help you find your style.

Trendiest areas of Manchester

When it comes to what to do when you’re in Manchester, there are lots of stylish spots worth spending time in. As it happens, Manchester’s also been ranked one of the top stag do cities in the world, so it’s somewhere you’ll have a great time, whether you’re there to celebrate a mate or not. Here’s where to head for good times in the city:

Ancoats

Popular with creatives, visitors and foodies, Ancoats is an old industrial part of Manchester that’s filled with independent restaurants, bars and experiences. There are plenty of outdoor spaces to spend your time in, like Cutting Room Square (aka Ancoats Square) that houses Michelin-starred Elnecot right next  to one of Manchester’s fave pizza spots, Rudy’s.

Northern Quarter

Located between Ancoats and Piccadilly train station, the Northern Quarter is the place to go out in Manchester. From bars masquerading as launderettes, video rental shops and pawn shops, through to Tiki bars, speakeasies and popups, this area really has it all. You’ll also find a ton of independent retailers, markets and street food, like the amazing Mackie Mayor food hall. It’s a popular spot for TV and film shoots, too, including Peaky Blinders.

Chorlton

Chorlton’s a relaxed suburb of the city that’s all about independent retailers, bars and restaurants, and there’s something for absolutely everyone. One of the best-rated restaurants in the area, Ban San Juan, is in Chorlton, so it’s worth checking out, even if you’re staying elsewhere. It also has a load of green spaces, bakeries and quirky grocers.

Castlefield

Filled with canals and outdoor spaces, along with some great places to eat and drink, Castlefield’s a mainly residential area that’s full of warehouse conversions, beer gardens by the canal and art venues like HOME and Castlefield Bowl. There’s also a sky park at Castlefield Viaduct if you fancy some outdoor space, with bars and restaurants in the railway arches, too. It’s located at the bottom of Deansgate, one of the main streets in the city centre, so it’s easy to get to.

Spinningfields

Spinningfields is a mix of business and pleasure, with a blend of high-profile businesses calling the area home alongside some of the best restaurants and bars in the city. There’s even outdoor space and plenty of spots to din al fresco. The Ivy Asia, Tattu, Australasia, The Oast House and 20 Stories are all in the area, plus plenty of premium retailers. You’ll find Spinningfields just off Deansgate.

If you’re into football, you’ll feel right at home. The National Museum of Football, Manchester United’s ground, Old Trafford, and Manchester City’s ground, the Etihad, are all within easy distance of the city centre and they’re accessible by transport. Book yourself in for match day tickets, a tour or event at one of these venues.

Manchester Cricket Ground, Manchester Velodrome, the National Cycling Centre and the National Basketball Performance Centre are all in the area too. So if football’s not your thing, you’ll find some other sporting activities to keep you entertained.

Manchester’s definitely a city that likes to make an effort. Dresswear’s always popular as people head to events, nights out and the latest new restaurants and venues. Tuxedos and dress shirts are some of the items people buy most at Moss, with smart tweed sets coming second.

When it comes to casualwear, Manchester loves ‘new neutrals’ with navy, stone, tobacco and khaki green all the most popular colours for casualwear. Shackets are also popular in the city, with linens and tech fabrics popular for layering, styling and wearing to lower-key events.

What to pack for a festival

Heading to a festival? Here’s what to bring.
Man in paisley Italian silk tie

ALL THE OUTFITS YOU NEED FOR A SUMMER FESTIVAL

Words: T. MacInnis

Packing for a festival can be challenging, especially if you’re contesting with always-unpredictable British summer weather. You might need something light one day, the warmest jumper you own the next day, and all the rain gear you brought the day after that. And, you want to look cool, of course.

So, what to pack to prepare yourself for anything a summer festival might throw at you? We’ve got you sorted, from lightweight shorts to graphic prints and the accessories that’ll tie it all together. Read on and get packing.

What are the festival essentials?

The ideal wardrobe for a festival is one that’s in the same colour palette and interchangeable. That’ll mean you can mix and match basically anything you’ve brought and you’ll have a new outfit. So if you have a pair of shorts in a neutral colour, a pair of lightweight trousers in another neutral, a solid-coloured jumper, a T-shirt, and a shirt that adds something extra, you’ll be set. Think: a striped Cuban collar in a breezy fabric.

A coordinated set is a great thing to pack as well, especially if it fits in with the colour palette you’ve chosen. Again, you can split up the separates and wear the shirt with trousers or the shorts with a jumper if (when) the weather changes.

What kinds of fabric are best for festival outfits?

If it’s going to be hot, your best bet is linen. Linen is about as breathable and lightweight as it gets, so you’ll be comfortable all day long. Cotton is also a great choice because, although it’s heavier than linen, it’s still breathable and easy to wear. An open-knit shirt is also a great option for unpredictable weather, and you can layer it over a T-shirt if the temperature drops.

No matter what fabrics you choose for your festival outfits, make sure they’re easy to pack, easy to throw on and easy to spot clean if it comes to it.

What accessories should I bring?

As nostalgic trends continue to prevail, the number one must-have on your festival packing list is, of course, a bucket hat. It’ll look great and protect you from the sun. Sandals that are easy to slip on and off are a great choice for footwear, and trainers are a must if you’re going to be on your feet all day. Otherwise, keep it simple with your accessories and don’t overthink it.

Whatever you decide to pack for your weekend at a festival this summer, make sure it’s comfortable, suits a variety of temperatures, and is low-effort to wear. And if you’re buying something new, make sure you’re choosing pieces that fit into your everyday wardrobe as well. That’ll help you consider your personal style and you’ll end up with pieces you’ll wear for years – and festivals – to come.

OUR GUIDE TO MEN’S DESTINATION WEDDING OUTFITS

Words: L. Thorpe

Getting married somewhere beautiful and warm? You’ll need a suit that’s right for the destination and can hold its own in the heat. Keep reading for all the suit advice you need for your destination wedding.

Why do people get married abroad?

A destination wedding is pretty much what it sounds like: getting married away from where you live, often at an overseas location. This usually means more planning and coordination. But it can be worth it to tie the knot somewhere that’s meaningful to you, or just for getting hitched against a stunning backdrop you can’t get in the UK.

The destination you choose might hold some memories for you as a couple, it might be iconic for weddings (we’re looking at you, Las Vegas), or it might be closer to family and friends. Even taking the cost of travel and accommodation into consideration, it can be cheaper to head overseas to get married vs. the UK (especially if it means a smaller wedding party). We suspect a lot of people choose to get married abroad for the guaranteed sunshine the UK just can’t match.

Let’s take a look at some of the most popular places to get married overseas, and some of the style challenges they bring with them.

What to wear to get married abroad ; a groom wears a grey wedding suit for a summer wedding

Popular locations to get married overseas

According to Hitched, some of the most popular wedding destinations in 2022 included:

• Istria, Croatia

• Phuket, Thailand

• Amalfi Coast, Italy

• Ibiza, Balearic Islands

• Lisbon, Portugal

• Santorini, Greece

• Var, France

• St Lucia, Caribbean

• Marbella, Spain

• Dubai, United Arab Emirates

Whether you’re heading to these sunny destinations for a beach wedding, getting married in a villa or a hotel,  it’s worth thinking about the precise location when it comes to your style choices. A tweed suit looks fantastic as a wedding outfit for example, but it might not be the most practical choice if you’re getting married on the beach at midday. Go for lighter fabrics like linen or seersucker, and keep your styling more relaxed with open collars and undone buttons.

If you’re planning a destination wedding at a stately home or a high-end hotel, you might want to up the style stakes and look at a tuxedo, a traditional morning suit or a three-piece suit. Planning a more laid-back wedding day? If a Las Vegas-style wedding or a big day in a big city is more your thing, go more contemporary in a checked suit, or play with colour in a pastel suit.

Wedding outfits for men getting married abroad

Remember, it’s your wedding day and you get to choose what you want to wear. What’s most important is that you feel comfortable ad confident at your wedding, wherever you get married. Remember you can choose to get your wedding outfit tailored, custom made or you can hire a wedding suit depending on what your priorities and your budget are.

Here are some of the most popular styles of wedding suits for men, especially if you’re planning a destination wedding.

What to wear to get married abroad ; a groom wears a blue linen wedding suit for a summer wedding

Seersucker suits

Ideal for a beach wedding, seersucker is cotton stitched in a particular way to give it a puckered texture. Since it’s cotton, that means it’ll offer all the breathability you’ll need on a hot day, and it’ll be nice and lightweight for travel (and won’t crease in your suitcase).

But, don’t take that beach setting too literally and choose a blue-and-white striped seersucker suit. Instead, keep it modern in a neutral seersucker suit that’ll go with just about any colour palette you and your partner choose for your big day. Keep the look relaxed with loafers and an open-collar shirt, or dress it up with a white shirt and Monk strap shoes.

Linen suits

A linen suit is ideal if you’re going for a relaxed, simple wedding day, whether that’s on the beach or in a small town. Because it’s a lightweight, breathable fabric, it’ll keep you cooler. Linen also tends to travel well, but its tendency to look a bit wrinkled might mean it’s not for you if you want that perfectly pressed look.

When it comes to styling, pair a light-coloured linen suit with a light shirt for a laid-back look. You can even wear a linen shirt with your linen suit, and add a pocket square or tie for a little visual interest.

What to wear to get married abroad ; a groom wears a navy wedding suit for a summer wedding

Going full-on formal

If you’re headed to a sunny locale but you’ve opted for a black-tie dress code, there’s no reason you actually have to sweat it out in black. Instead, go for a dinner jacket in a lighter, more summery colour, like this soft grey one. Wear it with a dress shirt, a bowtie and tuxedo trousers and you’ll still look every bit as dressed up as you should.

If you’ve chosen a really fancy location like a Tuscan villa or a hotel on the coast of Spain, match the formality and go with an Italian suit – apt if you’re headed to Tuscany. Made with the best fabrics from Italy’s most renowned mills, you’ll have a beautifully-made suit that’s more than appropriate for the special day.

Some final tips for getting married abroad

You should start by making a list of what you need to take with you. You don’t want to be halfway through a long-haul flight and realise you forgot to pack your tie (or worse, your actual suit). Think about everything from shoes to accessories and even your wedding party’s outfits. Have a backup plan just in case anything goes wrong with your luggage and avoid checking your wedding outfits.

Keep an eye on the weather at your destination, too. Even if you’re heading somewhere that’s usually sunny, it still might not be as hot as anticipated. Also, take a mini sewing kit with you and confirm your hotel has an iron or a steamer.

The most important tip for a destination wedding? Enjoy your special day in the beautiful surroundings you’ve chosen.

What to wear for a summer date

Now you know what city you’re headed for and what you’re doing when you get there, here’s some outfit inspiration to get you ready for your date.

A relaxed date look

Relaxed date look

Whether you’re going for a coffee, heading to an art gallery, strolling around a market, hitting the cinema or having a chilled picnic in the park, keep your outfit comfy and casual while still looking put together.

Pair some relaxed chinos with a polo and shacket for a laid back look that’ll still impress on the go. Add some loafers or smart trainers and you’re date-ready. Swap out the shacket for a bomber jacket if the weather’s looking a little dicey.

Dressing for dinner and drinks

Whatever the venue, dinner and drinks calls for getting a little dressier. Style a blazer with a shirt or T-shirt and smart trousers and shoes. If in doubt, scope out the venue first to see what other people are wearing.

If you’re not sure about a dress code, it can make sense to err on the side of caution and go for a little bit smarter. It’s better to be slightly overdressed and make an impression than have to stress out about not feeling dressed up enough.

A smart date look

Keeping confident

Feeling comfortable and confident is important for feeling your best on a date. So, once you’ve chosen the perfect spot, choose your outfit based on what makes you happy and captures your style.

How to create a Custom Made suit

Experience the feeling of having something made exclusively for you.

EXPERIENCE THE FEELING OF CUSTOM-MADE TAILORING

Words: L. Thorpe

It’s true: tailoring feels great to wear. But an item tailored exclusively for you?
There’s nothing else like it.

Experience the luxury of having something made to make you feel your absolute best with Moss Custom Made, our tailored suit service available across our UK stores.

Start with your pick of fabric from world-class mills, get expertly measured to fine-tune the fit, then craft every detail until it’s just-right for you. Then pick it up or have it delivered in just 28 days – all without the cost of a bespoke suit made from scratch.

What is a tailored suit?

There are a few different options when it comes to buying a tailored men’s suit, tailored-fit shirt or tailored trousers. Here’s a run-through of the differences between the three main types of tailored suit:

Made-to-measure – Also known as a custom-made suit, this style of men’s suit is created using an existing fit block that’s adjusted according to your exact measurements. You get to choose what you want when it comes to fabric, lining and finishings.

Bespoke suit – In tailoring, a bespoke suit is one that’s made entirely from scratch. The pattern it’s cut from is totally unique, the measurements are completely individual to you, and you can choose exactly what you want in terms of fabrics and finishes. It’s a seriously luxurious, and usually expensive, option.

Ready-to-wear – This suit style is what you’d buy straight from a store in your size. It’s much more budget-friendly than a made-to-measure suit or a bespoke option, so you could still have your suit altered or upgraded for a better fit if there are changes you want to make.

With Moss Custom Made, you’re getting made-to-measure tailoring, meaning you pick your fabric and we’ll tailor your garment to your specifications. That’s everything from changing the leg length of your trousers, to adding a statement lining or personalising the pockets, buttons and lapels on a blazer.

How does Moss Custom Made work?

Or browse our suits online and use one you like as a base for fine-tuning with our configurator.

Think beyond the three-piece

A custom wardrobe might once have been the reserve of the rich – but with Custom Made, it’s yours for the making.

How about a signature jacket that’s tailored to fit your frame so it feels top-tier to wear – and will take everything else you wear up a notch too? Or the perfect-fit trousers you’ve been searching for? Once you’ve made them exactly how you want them, we promise you’ll wear them again and again (and again).

Ready to choose your tailored men’s suit?

The first step is to start browsing to get some inspiration for what suit styles, fabrics and finishes you like so you have some idea of what you want to order. It might be worth trying on some different styles and colours so you can be confident in your choices.

Remember to build in 28 days for us to craft and deliver your garment if you want it for a particular event or date. Once you know what type of tailored suit you want, head over to Custom Made and book an appointment or start designing your custom outfit.

HOW TO WRITE A JOINT WEDDING SPEECH

BY PROFESSIONAL SPEECH WRITERS, SPEECHY

Joint speeches are a wedding trend that’s set to stay. It’s a great way of saying, ‘BOOM – we’re a team.’

We asked Heidi Ellert-McDermott, founder of Speechy and author of ‘The Modern Couple’s Guide to Wedding Speeches’ for advice on how to write a great one.

Words: H. Ellert-McDermott

Why give a joint speech

Delivering a joint speech is not only modern, it simply makes sense.

It means no one speaks on behalf of the other, you both get to thank your friends and family, and you can rehearse together. It also takes the pressure off just one of you and allows you to discuss your speech and have fun with it along the way.

Many of our Speechy clients have said their joint speech became the epicentre of their day and it’s become one of the day’s highlights.

How to write + deliver a joint speech

The same principles apply as writing a strong groom speech. The first stage is gathering great content and then deciding on a theme that ties the material together. The benefit of developing this as a couple, is you get two heads for the price of one and creativity has been proven to be infectious.

The key to ensuring the writing process is a pleasure, is being supportive of each other’s ideas. If your partner comes up with a lame joke, resist the urge to roll your eyes, bang your head on the table and wail ‘what’s the point?’. Instead, play with the idea; humour it, view it as a springboard to new ideas.

1 – gather your content

There’s no point trying to write your speech before you know what’s going in it, so schedule a date night with a purpose. Discuss and agree:

1 – gather your content

  • Who you want to thank – you’ll each probably want to thank both sets of parents, but only one of you needs to thank the ushers or bridesmaids
  • If any toasts to the dearly departed are necessary
  • What stories to include – a good speech relies on good stories so think about your best ‘couple’ anecdotes; the ones that will give guests an insight into your relationship and, ideally, provide some laughter too
  • Your speech theme – that narrative hook that holds everything together so your speech sounds more than just a tedious list of thank yous and a couple of stories tagged on at the end

2 – split up

Once you have your material, it’s time to structure and write the speech – but writing as a couple can be tricky. You thought table planning was hard? Crafting a speech is even more complex!

Our advice is to split up; one of you writes the first draft and the other one improves it. Even this will require some negotiation but at least you won’t be debating words as you write.

Divide the speech so you each have small sections to deliver (2 – 6 sentences) and alternate throughout.

Like all good comedy duos, think about how you can play off each other. Script comedy ‘ad libs’. If your relationship dynamic lends itself, one of you can play the straight man and the other the fall guy. Play with what you got.

3 – keep secrets

While a marriage is all about being open and honest, a joint wedding speech means keeping a few things to yourself. Specifically, a romantic paragraph towards the end of the speech that you each write privately.

You can then each deliver your secret sentiment tribute to your partner on the day, just before you jointly propose the toast.

4 – length

Just because there’s two of you, doesn’t mean the speech can be double the length. In fact, still aim for less than 1,300 words so your delivery comes in under ten minutes on the day.

5 – rehearse

The good news is the sole pressure of delivering your speech is off. The bad news? Delivering your speech has become a bit more complicated. The ease of a double act takes some rehearsal. Especially if you want the ‘ad libs’ to look natural.

You also need to think about what you’re doing when the other person is talking. Make sure you look at the person talking and react. Don’t just lose yourself in your notes!

Smile, roll your eyes, look at one another and play off each other throughout. Your facial expressions can elicit as much laughter as a funny line.

6 – on the day

Simply enjoy it! We guarantee, a joint speech will be loved by everyone in the room.

Gifts for anniversaries: what to buy and when?

All the best leather gifts to buy your dad this Father’s Day.

HERE’S WHAT TO BUY YOUR PARTNER BASED ON YOUR MILESTONE

Words: L. Thorpe

Wedding anniversaries are one of those things that are best not to forget. They’re a celebration of love, longevity and commitment that’s extra important to remember, together. As well as celebrating and commemorating this special occasion, you also need to make sure you buy the right anniversary gift to celebrate your special milestone.

What anniversary gift should you get?

While it’s always way better to get an anniversary gift that your person will actually like, it’s fun to keep in with tradition and pick up a gift that commemorates how long you’ve been together. Not sure what to get and when?

Here are the traditional anniversary gifts for every milestone, with some ideas of what to ask for and how to celebrate:

1st anniversary – paper

The traditional gift for the first anniversary is paper, which represents the blank page of a new beginning. Some ideas for paper gifts include personalised stationery, a journal, a framed photo or tickets to a concert or show. Gift vouchers or money are also two options for the paper anniversary, but they might feel a little less personal.

2nd anniversary – cotton

The second anniversary gift is cotton, which represents the comfort and durability of a marriage. Home accessories like bedding and towels are good cotton gifts, but what’s even better are cotton shirts or clothing. They’re practical, versatile and come in every style, plus you can guarantee they’ll be lovingly worn. You can even head out for an anniversary celebration wearing your new shirt.

3rd anniversary – leather

Leather gifts are traditional for the third anniversary, representing strength and durability. Leather gifts are one of the easiest to buy for every taste too, with leather belts, bags, shoes or something like a beautiful leather-bound journal all great options for an anniversary gift.

4th anniversary – fruit/flowers

The fourth anniversary gift is fruit or flowers, which represents the growth and blossoming of a relationship. The obvious gifts here are flowers, a plant or a fruit basket. You could always go for something flower or fruit-themed if your partner isn’t into the above options. A floral pocket square, shirt or tie is still on-theme without being too outdoorsy.

5th anniversary – wood

The fifth anniversary gift is wood, which represents the strength and durability of a relationship. Some ideas for wood gifts include a personalised wooden cutting board, wooden jewellery or something for the home like furniture or a wooden photo frame.

10th anniversary – tin/aluminium

The tenth anniversary gift is tin or aluminium, which is meant to represent the flexibility and strength of a relationship. While tin isn’t the most glamorous material, there are still some great gift ideas like a watch, jewellery, cufflinks or a personalised tin, plaque or hip flask.

15th anniversary – crystal

The fifteenth anniversary gift is crystal, which shows the clarity and transparency of a relationship of this length. Jewellery is the obvious choice here, but home accessories, cufflinks, keepsakes and photo frames are another way to add a little touch of sparkle into your anniversary.

20th anniversary – china

If you’ve made it to 20 years of marriage or you’re celebrating with friends and family who have, congratulations! This is a huge milestone to celebrate, with the traditional anniversary gift of china symbolising the elegance and delicate nature of a relationship, even one that spans two decades. Dinnerware, tea sets and accessories are probably the main option for this one.

25th anniversary – silver

The twenty-fifth anniversary is a significant milestone, and the traditional gift is silver, representing the shine and endurance of a relationship. Silver jewellery, silverware or home accessories are great silver anniversary gifts, but why not go for something a little different with a silver tie clip, armbands and dress studs?

30th anniversary – pearl

The thirtieth anniversary gift is pearl, which represents the beauty and rarity of a relationship. Some ideas for pearl anniversary gifts include pearl jewellery or something pearl-related for the home. However, take it in a different direction and go for a pair of Mother of Pearl cufflinks for a classic style that celebrates this amazing event.

40th anniversary – ruby

The fortieth anniversary gift is ruby, which represents the passion and love in a relationship. The obvious gift here is a ruby encrusted watch or jewellery, but you can’t go wrong with a ruby red tie and accessories either. Even going all out with a red shirt or suit can be an amazing way to celebrate. If you’re thinking about going all out, why not try a red-themed party?

50th anniversary – gold

Getting to fifty years together is definitely something to celebrate! The fiftieth anniversary gift is gold, which represents the precious and rare nature of a relationship. Gold jewellery, a gold watch or gold accessories like dress studs and cufflinks are a great gift for a fiftieth wedding anniversary.

In conclusion, choosing the perfect anniversary gift can be challenging, but it is an essential way to celebrate the milestones of your relationship. By following the traditional or modern anniversary gift guidelines, you can create a thoughtful and meaningful gift that represents the longevity, commitment, and love you share with your partner.

Whatever special event you’re celebrating this year, do it in style with some occasion wear.

Father’s Day gift guide

All the best leather gifts to buy your dad this Father’s Day.

NO MATTER YOUR DAD’S STYLE, HERE’S A GIFT HE’LL LOVE

Words: T. MacInnis

Father’s Day is just around the corner, and if you’re still looking for a gift for your dad, we’re here to help you out. Whether he’s a jet setter, a homebody or got loads of events to prep for this summer, Moss has a leather gift we know he’ll love. Keep reading to find the perfect choice.

If your dad’s a commuter

Make his life a little easier (and more stylish) on his daily commute with this brown Saffiano-style bag. With room enough for his laptop, tablet, and anything else he needs for a day at the office, this is a more utilitarian take on a classic briefcase with its functional strap two-way zip.

If he needs an accessory upgrade

How many of our dads have been wearing the same well-worn belt for years, not finding the time to upgrade? This reversible belt, with tis textured black leather on one side and smooth brown leather on the other, is a classic Father’s Day gift. It’s a staple, but it’s special enough to make it right for a dad who values form and function.

If he’s got loads of events this summer

Summer is wedding season, and if your dad is partaking, help him protect all his outfits with this Saffiano-style trimmed suit carrier. Whether he’s headed to a destination wedding, or just wants to store his suit properly in his wardrobe, this bag will help keep it neat and crease-free.

If your dad’s always on the go

If your dad’s a jet setter, frequently traveling for work or always off on holiday, this streamlined grained leather washbag is just what he needs to keep all his toiletries in check. It’s made with water-resitant material, too, so everything else in his suitcase will be safe if there’s a leak.

If he needs a wallet upgrade

Much like that aforementioned leather belt, a leather wallet seems to be another essential item dads struggle to replace. Help him pare back what he carries with him and keep it all in a sleek package with this black grained leather cardholder.

No matter what leather gift you choose for your dad this year, make sure you can picture him using it on a regular basis, and it suits his style. Then you know he’ll love it and he’ll think of you every time he uses it.

How to build a capsule wardrobe

Simplify your wardrobe and take the guesswork out of getting dressed.

HOW TO TAKE THE GUESSWORK OUT OF GETTING DRESSED

Words: T. MacInnis

As we all try to shop more mindfully, consume less, and wear what we already own, the concept of a capsule wardrobe can be a great way forward. It can save you time, stop you from buying things you don’t need, and make your wardrobe more sustainable.

But what is a capsule wardrobe, and how can you make it work for you and your life? Read on to learn more about what you need to build your own capsule wardrobe, and how it’ll make getting dressed easier.

What is a capsule wardrobe?

A capsule wardrobe is just a selection of clothes that you can mix and match to create outfits for every occasion. Everything is versatile, which will help you build more outfits with less pieces.

You might be familiar with the concept of a capsule wardrobe, since it’s been a hot topic for a few years now. But, it actually originated in the ’70s at a boutique right here in London, and then took off when womenswear designer Donna Karan created a capsule collection that included just seven essential pieces.

The revival of the concept of a capsule wardrobe makes sense, as we all contend with busier lives and smaller budgets. It also fits with a more sustainable approach to shopping, because building a capsule wardrobe will help you choose less trend-driven items you know you’ll wear.

What pieces do I need for a capsule wardrobe?

Once you’ve taken stock of what you have, it’s time to figure out what else you might need. A great place to start is by identifying a colour palette, or choosing one if it’s not already clear. Neutrals with one or two brighter colours that complement each other is usually the way to go.

This is flexible, of course, but you should have:

  • three T-shirts, ideally one black, one white, and one colour
  • three jumpers, one cotton and two knits
  • a knitted roll neck
  • a polo shirt
  • two casual button-down shirts, one white and one blue
  • two pairs of jeans, one black and one blue
  • a pair of joggers you can dress up and down
  • a pair of chinos in a neutral colour
  • a pair of shorts in a neutral colour
  • two suits, one navy and one grey
  • a blazer in a neutral colour
  • two formal shirts, one white and one blue
  • four coats, one lightweight, one for cold weather, one waterproof, and one overcoat
  • five pairs of shoes, including trainers, brogues, loafers, boots and sandals
  • two bags, one messenger and one tote
  • accessories, including two ties, a belt, a pair of sunglasses, and any other extras for added personality
  • essential basics, like socks, underwear, undershirts, and swimwear

This will leave you with roughly 30 pieces you can mix and match, depending on the weather, where you’re headed, and what you feel like wearing. As you build those outfits, take some photos of what works together so you don’t forget, and get creative with your pairings. That’s how you’ll fool people into thinking you’ve got way more than you do.

How do I build a capsule wardrobe?

First up, you’ll want to take stock of what you have, find out what you can get rid of, and see what might be missing. If anything doesn’t fit, you haven’t worn it in at least a year, or if you have duplicates of it, sell or donate. Then, divide what’s left into categories: bottoms, tops, jumpers, shirts, outerwear, tailoring and accessories.

Then, build ten outfits with what you have based on your personal style and your usual routine. You might want four everyday outfits, three work outfits, one holiday outfit, one smart-casual outfit, and one formal outfit. Of course, some of these will overlap, which is ideal, actually.

This is when you might find you’re missing some of the essentials we mentioned above. Gather those up as you need them, and again, when you’re choosing them, make sure they fit in to your existing wardrobe.

Can I work trend-driven pieces into my capsule wardrobe?

We all fall in love with new, trendy pieces that drop every season. Of course, if you love something and it suits you and your personal style, go for it. But, as you’re considering adding it to your capsule wardrobe, make sure it can be worked into at least four of your existing outfits, or that it at least can create a new one that’s versatile. Beware over overly-trendy prints or colours, though, because you’ll likely grow tired of them, and they might be hard to pair with what you’ve already got.

Whatever you choose, try not to overthink it, and remember: building a capsule wardrobe is about making your life simpler, and making less of an impact.
