HOW TO BUILD A SHOE WARDROBE FOR AUTUMN ’22

Words: T. MacInnis

A big part of transitioning your wardrobe from summer to autumn is changing up your footwear. While we love the socks with sandals look, it’s not really something you can wear everywhere, especially when the temperatures drop.

Instead, you’ll want sturdier options that are comfortable, warm and all weather-ready. Think a solid pair of trainers with a bit of texture, black leather Chelseas for the fancier occasions, and a functional pair of lace-up boots you can wear with just about everything. Read on for four shoes you need this season.

Classic Chelsea boots

Taking their name from the posh London neighbourhood, Chelsea boots have been popular since the ’50s and ’60s. That enduring style is thanks to a timeless silhouette and an ideal combo of form and function. Find a good Chelsea boot, and you’ll be reaching for it year after year.

Our Gladstone Chelsea boot, made with black leather, is a great option. The almond toe evokes a dress shoe, while the elasticated side and stacked wooden heel keep them classic and super wearable. Pair them with joggers, and it’ll polish your look for an evening out, or wear them with a suit to dress it down a little.

Dressed-up desert boots

When you think of desert boots, you might think of tan suede and a rubber sole. But this season, we’ve done desert boots a little different with shiny brown leather and a stacked, wooden heel. All the better for a rainy British autumn, we think.

Try them with denim and a chunky roll neck jumper to elevate your look. Or, if you’ve got a smart-casual occasion coming up, wear them with a navy blue suit instead of a dress shoe. You’ll still look put together, but a bit more prepared for whatever the unpredictable weather could bring.

Statement chunky trainers

The streetwear trend endures, and the best way to take it on (in our opinion) is with a chunky trainer. Not only do they instantly make any outfit look trendier, but they’re also super comfortable. Ideal if you’re on your feet all day at work or at the weekend.

Our Brighton chunky trainer ticks all the boxes. Not only does it have that oversized, textured sole, but it also has the added element of leather and suede detailing to set it apart. Wear them with sweats, wear them with joggers, wear them with chinos, or even wear them with a suit if you’re feeling adventurous.

Black chunky boots

If you’re looking for something subtly different for your autumn boot collection, we suggest a black boot, but with something a little extra. The chunky sole on our lace-up boot for the season is that something extra.

This pair is made for that rolled-up cuff on your favourite pair of trousers, but could also work as an unexpected finishing touch for a dark suit at the office. Again, as all autumn footwear should be, these boots are functional without compromising style.

Streamlined trainers

A solid pair of go-with-everything trainers is a must for autumn/winter. They’ll go with jeans, they’ll go with joggers, they’ll even go with a suit for those smart-casual occasions.

This season, we’ve updated our classic white trainer in two new shades of suede: chocolate and camel. Both will add a nice hit of neutral colour to your autumn wardrobe, without overwhelming any other colours you’re wearing.

No matter what footwear you choose for the season, make sure it fits well and it’s comfortable. Also, take a bit of time to consider whether it works with what you’ve already got in your wardrobe. Ticking both of these boxes means you’ll have a pair of shoes you’ll actually wear all season long, and hopefully into next year, too.

Get the Peaky look in a tweed suit

Big fan of Peaky Blinders? You need a tweed suit.

WANT THE PEAKY LOOK? YOU NEED A TWEED SUIT

Words: T. MacInnis

After almost two decades in the suit business, Moss is a leader in British tailoring. That’s why we’re the official outfitters for Peaky Blinders: The Rise, a new immersive experience based on the hit show. If you’re planning to attend the experience, you’re encouraged to dress the part. We can help with that.

Not only is tweed a classic suiting fabric, but it’s also the perfect way to capture that Peaky look thanks to its popularity in the ’20s. Even better, it’s been having a resurgence over the past few years, which means if you’ve got a great tweed suit for the show, you’ll want to keep wearing it, again and again. Read on to see four of our latest and greatest tweed suits.

peaky blinders tweed suit

Fig Donegal tweed

The fig tone of this Donegal-style tweed suit is one of our favourite colours for AW22. It’s punchy, but still wearable and versatile. Wear this one with its matching waistcoat and tan brogues when you’re headed to the show, and then swap in a padded gilet and white trainers for chillier days at the office.

peaky blinders tweed suit

Olive herringbone tweed

The cut of this tweed suit is a bit roomier, so you get an even more Peaky-appropriate look. The olive tone also calls on the ’20s, as does the herringbone finish. Again, wear this one with the matching waistcoat, and then rewear it for any autumn or winter weddings you have in your diary this year, and next year, too.

peaky blinders tweed suit

Checked tweed

Want something that really makes a statement? Our black, white, tobacco and blue checked suit fits the bill. You’ll stand out, but still look decade-appropriate. Yet again, the waistcoat is a must for Peaky Blinders: The Rise, but separate it out and wear the jacket with jeans for a more casual workday.

peaky blinders tweed suit

Sage tweed

This is one of our best-selling suits, and it’s not hard to see why. The sage green tone is different, but still wearable, and the cut is form-fitting but super comfortable. For Peaky, you’ll get a look Arthur Shelby would absolutely wear, and for the rest of the season, you’ll have a versatile suit that you can wear to the office, to a wedding, and anywhere in between.

Now you’ve got your Peaky tweed suit sorted, get your tickets for Peaky Blinders: The Rise right here. Then, keep on wearing that tweed suit for seasons to come.

How to wear army green and grey this autumn

Here’s how to wear the military-inspired shade of green with classic autumn neutral, grey.

HERE’S HOW TO WEAR MILITARY-INSPIRED GREEN WITH CLASSIC AUTUMN NEUTRAL, GREY

Words: T. MacInnis

Army green, also known as khaki, is a classic earth tone for autumn. And the good news is, it goes with loads of other colours. Wear it with denim, wear it with black, wear it with lighter browns, and you’ll have a winning combo. But, one of our favourite and maybe slightly more unexpected pairings is army green and grey.

Whether you’ve opted for an army green suit for a day at the office, an overshirt for a weekend mini break or an every day piece of outerwear, pairing those pieces with grey will really make them pop. Read on for some of our favourite green-and-grey pairings to add to your autumn wardrobe.

khaki and grey outfit

Dress down a green suit with a grey turtleneck

An army green suit is a great choice for autumn, and a nice deviation from your usual navy or grey. It’s particularly good if you’re keen to wear a coloured suit but don’t want to go too bold.

You can go classic and pair your army green suit with a white shirt and a contrasting tie, of course. But, if you’re again looking for something a bit different, try wearing your suit with a charcoal merino roll-neck. This is a great look for a more casual city wedding, or for a day at the office.

grey trousers rollneck

Add a casual trouser to your autumn wardrobe

If you’ve found a favourite army green shirt or jumper, and you’re keen to wear it with something other than jeans, a pair of soft grey joggers could be the ticket. Just keep the rest of your outfit minimal and super neutral. Think, a pair of black boots or a navy gilet. Pieces like that will let your khaki green-and-grey combo stand out.

khaki green shirt grey trousers

Outerwear in army green

It’s always fun to choose something a bit different for your outerwear, because you’ll likely end up wearing it a few times a week. But, if you’re choosing a colour, you’ll want to make sure it’s still wearable with the rest of your wardrobe. Army green, of course, is a winner here. Not only does it look great with those grey joggers (see above), but you can layer an army green jacket over just about any jumper, save for other shades of brighter green.

We also love a good houndstooth pattern, and this one puts grey and green on the same shacket. Again, we love it with both a lighter grey or a similar charcoal to the one in the houndstooth.

Whichever army green and grey pieces you choose to add to your autumn wardrobe, make sure you can envision wearing them with pieces you already have. It’s a wearable combo, and we bet you’ll reach for it more often than you might have thought.

How to wear navy, fig, tobacco and white this season

Here’s how to wear another autumn colour palette: tobacco, navy, fig and white.
autumn colour

HERE’S HOW TO WEAR THIS UNEXPECTED AUTUMN COLOUR PALETTE

Words: T. MacInnis

Unlike spring and summer, it can be hard to strike the right balance when it comes to colour in autumn. If it’s a bit too bright, it’ll feel too summery, but too dark can also feel a bit dreary on a rainy day. Enter your new favourite colour palette: fig and navy, paired with neutral white and warm tobacco.

Whether you’re headed to a wedding, to the office, or to the pub, there are so many ways to wear any combination of these autumn-ready hues. Keep reading to find out how to work them into your wardrobe, and shop some of our favourite fig, navy, white and tobacco pieces.

autumn colour

Tobacco and navy… or white

Navy is a staple colour for autumn, mostly because it’s a bit softer than black and it goes with basically everything. Another thing it has over black? It pairs far better with all shades of brown, including tobacco. See above in our merino-blend polo worn with flannel joggers. The polo has a vintage feel, but the joggers make it modern.

If you really love tobacco, why not invest in a timeless double-breasted tobacco suit? It’s an unexpected alternative to your usual neutrals of either grey or taupe, and each piece will look great when you separate them. Pair it with a crisp white shirt for an autumn wedding, or with a merino roll neck for an evening out. Tobacco’s versatility might surprise you, but we think you should embrace it.

autumn colour

Staple pieces in fig, accessories in tobacco

A shade of red might not feel like it has staple potential, but fig is different. This deep, warm hue looks good with every skin tone, and it also pairs well with pretty much any other colour outside of the red family. We love it with (you guessed it) white and tobacco.

Above, our fig flannel joggers are finished off with a white merino roll neck and our white chunky trainers. It’s an ideal outfit if your office is a more relaxed environment, or even if you’re working from home. Opting for an overshirt in fig is also a great way to work the hue into your autumn wardrobe. If you want to offset that fig with something more neutral, choosing accessories in tobacco, like this made-in-England suede belt, can achieve that effortlessly.

autumn colour

Outerwear in navy

Again, another instance where navy makes a great alternative to black: autumn coats. A trench like this one is a more subtle move into cooler temperatures, and of course, it looks excellent with a tobacco roll-neck jumper underneath. If you’re looking for something a bit heavier, try a navy peacoat. Or, if you want even more layering potential, a navy gilet.

The dawn of a new season is a great time to take on a colour palette you haven’t tried before. Whether you throw yourself into it and go head-to-toe tobacco, or opt for just an accessory, one or two items in a new hue can really refresh your wardrobe. Just make sure that new piece works with at least three things you already have, and make sure you love it. Then, you’ll wear it all the time, year after year.

Introducing our AW22 Esquire editor’s pick collection

Here are the Esquire editor’s favourite pieces for autumn.

SHOP THE ESQUIRE EDITOR’S FAVOURITE PIECES FROM OUR AW22 COLLECTION

Words: T. MacInnis

This season, we’re excited to announce the editor at Esquire magazine has hand picked some of their favourite pieces from our AW 22 collection. From a checked suit to a boucle overcoat to worker joggers, this edit will help you prep your wardrobe for autumn.

Hitting that mix of tradition and modernity, “casual has seldom looked so smart, and dressing to impress has rarely felt so effortless,” say the Esquire editors. Read on to see the full collection and find out what’s going to make you love these pieces, too.

The perfect autumn suit

If you’re looking for a printed suit for an autumn wedding, or just a chillier day at the office, this boucle one is ideal. There’s no better print for this season than a check, and blue is a more exciting choice than your traditional grey or black check. But don’t let that brighter hue fool you. It’s just as versatile and wearable, and can be dressed down with a pair of trainers or up with the matching waistcoat.

Top layers

If cosiness is your top priority when looking for a winter coat, we’re with you. The brushed boucle finish on this one is so soft and warm, you’ll never want to take it off. But, when you do, make sure your next layer adds a bit of contrast, both in texture and colour. This ecru knit fits the bill, and its zip neck will add a bit of visual interest underneath the coat.

Mix and match

We’re loving cord this season, especially when it comes in an unexpected colour like this greyed-out teal. The silhouette of this jacket is also unexpected, thanks to the blend of traditional tailoring from the double-breasted closure and the more relaxed feel of the cord. Pair it with contrasting camel joggers for a creative twist on your usual suiting.

Softer layers

Gear up for those warmer autumn days with lighter layers in the form of a blazer and a merino zip-neck jumper. You’ll look just as smart with the blazer off or on, thanks to the more form-fitting cut of the jumper. Then, you can pair the blazer with its matching trousers for an all-season suit.

Form meets function

The ideal boot for autumn is one that looks good and holds up in unpredictable weather. This boot meets both those criteria, with its trendy tread sole and sturdy leather construction. Same goes for the light grey safari shirt. Not only does it look smart, with its soft flecks and black buttons, but it’s got serious layering potential.

The best pieces for autumn are the ones you know you’ll wear well into winter. That way, you’ll get more for your investment. Each piece in our Esquire editor’s pick collection is ready for most (if not all) seasons, and we’re excited to see how you make it your own.

How to build a hard-working wardrobe for autumn, inspired by Fred Sirieix

Take it from Fred. A busy autumn calls for a versatile wardrobe.

This collection is ideal if you want to create a considered capsule wardrobe, with a few special, stand-out pieces mixed in. The perfect fit for you, for your wardrobe and for whatever comes your way this season.”

– Fred

Read on for all of Fred’s favourite looks, and a few tips for styling this season.

Autumn-ready layers

When it comes to layering, nothing works harder in transitional seasons than a gilet. This autumn/winter, our navy gilet is padded enough for just the right amount of added warmth, and lightweight enough to wear under or over pretty much anything. For a smart-casual look, try styling it underneath a checked suit, and for those off-duty days, wear it over a merino roll-neck jumper in a tonal hue.

Quality, wear-everywhere knitwear

Knitwear is one of the best things about colder months. It’s cosy, versatile, and adding just one or two new pieces to last year’s wardrobe can instantly update it. This navy polo neck, made with merino wool, is one we know you’ll reach for again and again. Not only is it super soft and lightweight, but it’ll keep up with you throughout the week. Wear it on its own with a pair of chinos, or layer it under a flannel blazer for another smart-casual look.

Autumn weekend warriors

With the best autumn pieces, you’ll get that ideal combo of form and function, so you’ll both look and feel great. That means you can put together loads of outfits that are perfect for whatever you’ve got on at the weekend. Our chunky cable roll-neck jumper is a great example. It’s made with temperature-regulating lambswool blended with shape-retaining fibres, so it’ll bounce back, season after season. Then, this fig overshirt and jogger set is like elevated, autumn-ready sweats. Reach for it when you’re headed somewhere laid back, like a Sunday roast or a game night.

Whatever pieces you decide to add to your wardrobe this fall, follow Fred’s lead and choose them for both quality and versatility. Hitting both those marks means you’ll want to wear them again and again, and not just this year.

HOW TO WEAR FIG, NAVY, CAMEL AND WHITE THIS AUTUMN

Words: T. MacInnis

As the days get shorter and the temperatures get lower, you might be tempted to start wearing exclusively dark colours. We get that – black looks good on everyone. But, we also think autumn is a great time to add a little unexpected colour to your wardrobe.

The trick is to choose warmer, richer shades that still evoke that feeling of cosiness you want this season, and then offset them with complimentary or contrasting tones. Think deep burgundies paired with classic navy, or a slight off-white white with a neutral camel. The options for this colour palette are endless, but read on for a few suggestions.

Layering fig, camel and white

Autumn is the prime season for layering. When you spend the day moving from the chilly outdoors to super hot public transit to climate-controlled indoors, your outfit needs to be able to adapt. This is when you can get creative with different textures, prints and colours.

Our camel flannel gilet not only adds an extra layer of warmth, but it also brightens up a more muted colour palette. Or, when paired with a colour like fig, it makes a real statement that’s still understated. Same goes for choosing what to wear with a neutral, camel suit. Opt again for offsetting it with fig tones. That will work especially well if the pattern also has the same camel tone running through it, and a bit of white to ground the whole thing.

Embrace bold patterns

You might think printed shirts are meant to be reserved for warmer months or beach holidays. Think again. You can absolutely keep wearing printed shirts in the autumn and winter, particularly ones that veer more geometric rather than floral, and in tones that make sense for the season.

Our retro-inspired printed shirt (coming soon) ticks all those autumnal boxes. The print is approachable but still offers a little personality, and the fig, camel and white palette will go just as great with denim or joggers as it will with a navy suit.

Focus on the trousers

You might think colour is only for your top half, opting for more basic, pared back trousers in the autumn. But that doesn’t have to be the case. Opting for an unexpected shade on your lower half in the autumn can be a fun way to change up your look.

Our joggers come in fig, camel, grey and navy this season, and they’ll give you endless outfit options no matter where life takes you. Want to dress them up? Throw on a tonal blazer. Want to make a statement? Try a printed shirt or patterned jacket for maximum impact.

Winning outerwear

When it comes to coats and jackets, you might be inclined to reach for something neutral. But, a brighter shade can be equally as wearable. Our fig overcoat will go with just about anything, and it’ll let you (subtly) stand out in the sea of black and navy coats that dominate people’s autumn wardrobes.

Want to be super warm? Try layering a patterned blazer underneath your overcoat for just a hint of extra colour. And nothing will let those coats dominate your outfit better than a white merino knit.

We know adding colour to your look can be a bit intimidating, so always start with just one piece against more neutral shades and build it up from there. But, if you’re feeling adventurous, don’t be afraid to mix and match. Pay attention to what you feel great in, wear that, and you’ll always look your best.

Meet your new favourite autumn-ready trousers

The joggers you need for autumn ’22.

THE JOGGERS YOU NEED FOR AUTUMN ’22

Words: T. MacInnis

Most of us have office time built in to our usual routines by now. But, dress codes have changed, and we bet your personal style has changed, too. Maybe you’re considering comfort more than before, which might leave you looking for the right trousers that balance that comfort with an office-appropriate look.

Enter joggers. With a relaxed fit and tailoring codes built in, you’ll feel like you’re wearing sweats, but look like you’re wearing trousers. It’s a win-win. Below, meet the season’s best joggers, and find out where to wear them and what to wear them with.

Berry-hued flannel joggers

If you tend to gravitate towards darker colours or more neutral tones come autumn/winter, it’s time to add a bit of bright into your wardrobe. A great way to do that without taking too much of a risk is opting for berry-hued shades. They’re still muted, but will add an unexpected element to your basics.

These worker joggers are a great example. When joggers tend to come in darker or neutral colours, this berry colour plays off the relaxed-meets-tailored silhouette. If you’re not a big colour person, pair them with a camel zip-neck polo. Or, if you’re game for an all-over coloured look, go with a punchier petrol blue.

Cord joggers in a neutral taupe

Corduroy is set to be a massive trend again this autumn, and one of the best ways to wear it is via trousers. But, while everyone else is wearing a jean-inspired silhouette, do something different with our cord joggers.

With these joggers, the texture of the cord and its taupe colour make them a statement piece. So, when you’re choosing what to wear with them, think about what’s going to let them do the talking. A winter-white rollneck is a great option, finished off with white trainers or a leather boot.

Navy flannel joggers

Here’s something super easy to wear that you’ll reach for constantly: navy joggers. They’ll go with just about anything that’s already in your autumn wardrobe, while still offering an element of style thanks to their pleated front and drawstring waist.

If you’re going for these ones, don’t be afraid to add some colour or a print to your top half. A checked overshirt is a great way to do just that. A casual printed shirt with a bit of navy running through it layered under a neutral cardigan is also a great option when the temperatures drop.

Flannel joggers in a neutral camel

An unexpected alternative to your typical grey or beige trouser, camel is a neutral too that’s just as wearable. Try these flannel ones with a wine zip-neck jumper for an autumnal colour palette that’ll stand out, but won’t overdo it.

If you work in a more relaxed environment, camel joggers will help you show off your personal style. Otherwise, they’re great for a smart-casual dress code at the weekend, or really anything you’ve got going on.

As always, styling your joggers is down to your personal taste, and whatever makes you feel the most comfortable. Comfort is, as we’ve said, the whole point of these trousers.

The return of corduroy

Corduroy was a huge trend last autumn, and it’s back again this year. But we’re not just doing a pair of straight leg, cord trousers. Instead, we’ve taken this sometimes-casual fabric and made it into a super smart suit. It’s relaxed and comfortable, thanks to the cord, and the cut of the work joggers.

Then, we’ve kept it casual with our teal cord jacket. It’s a pop of colour amongst those seasonal earthier tones, offering some personality and visual interest to autumn wardrobe staples.

The art of layering

And of course, we have loads of great suiting separates, prime for all your formal occasions but also for some on-trend layering. Pair any of our jackets and blazers with a tonal gilet, jumper and pair of relaxed trousers to maximise their versatility.

Blazers, jackets and waistcoats: what’s the difference?

If you need something to wear over your outfit and you’re unsure whether a blazer, jacket or waistcoat is your best option, here’s when and how to wear them.
mens blazers and mens jacket; two models for moss bros

What are blazers, jackets and waistcoats?

When it comes to layering, adding a blazer, jacket or waistcoat is one of the best options. You can put it on or take it off depending on the weather and it can seriously style up your outfit. If you’re looking to make a casual outfit smarter (or vice versa), you can easily change it with what you wear over the top.

Men’s blazers

Men’s blazers are sometimes thought of as a smarter style, but they can just as easily be casual wear too. It depends on how you style them and what you wear with them. Generally, a blazer looks a bit like a suit jacket but has a more casual cut and a more relaxed fit. You’ll usually find blazers are made out of less formal fabrics, too, making them as easy to wear with a t-shirt and jeans as a shirt, tie and chinos.

With a blazer, you can pair it with matching trousers for a more relaxed suit style or you can wear them with a more casual look. Because you can pick them up in different fits, cuts and colours, choosing one that’ll complement the rest of your outfit is easy. Cotton and linen blazers in lighter colours are a great choice for spring and summer, whereas wool or tweed in darker blends suits winter way more.

mens blazers and mens jacket; two models for moss bros

Men’s jackets

When it comes to men’s jackets, the possibilities are endless. You can go smart with a blazer or a suit jacket or you can keep it casual in a sports jacket, puffer jacket, leather jacket or bomber jacket. What you wear, how you style them and what you pair them with is totally up to you.

To style a men’s jacket, take a look at the rest of your outfit and think about where you’re headed, along with what the weather’s doing. Sometimes staying dry is the most important thing when it comes to choosing what jacket to wear! If the rest of your outfit is pretty casual, and you’re wearing jeans or combats, then it makes sense to wear a more casual jacket. If you’re dressing up for a date or an event, choose a smart jacket or a blazer.

Men’s waistcoats

mens waistcoats: model wearing moss bros waistcoat

A little like men’s jackets, waistcoats can be worn for casual or formal events. Traditionally, they make up part of a 3 piece suit adding an extra layer to this smart ensemble. They usually button up, have no sleeves and are designed to match the other parts of your suit, though sometimes they intentionally contrast too. However, waistcoats are actually standing out on their own a little more and making up their own 2 piece suit style without a jacket. Especially in the summer months for events like weddings and garden parties where you still want to look good but not get too hot.

Waistcoats are also more common in less formal settings now too, you’ll see them worn for dates, dinners and work where there’s a middle point between wanting to look like you made an effort but not going the whole way with a suit. Try a tweed waistcoat or a linen waistcoat for a more casual look, and experiment with lighter colours away from traditional navy and black. Waistcoats also come in different fits and cuts, so if you’re taller, or bigger, or you’ve tried one on before and haven’t been keen, try changing up the style you’re going for.

Are there other jacket styles out there?

mens jacket: man wearing a blue linen suit from moss bros

In short, there is definitely a lot of variety in men’s jacket styles. Even within a certain style, you’ll get different fabrics, fits and embellishments that totally change up the look. That’s why it’s usually worth trying stuff on, ideally with the type of outfit you’d wear it with, to get a feel for what actually suits you. You might just be surprised with some types of jacket or coat that you’d never have normally worn.

Formal events, like black tie dinners, for example, usually mean dinner jackets, dress jackets and tuxedo jackets in traditional colours. Less formal events might mean a more casual suit jacket in less traditional fabric. A shacket, bomber jacket or overshirt is a great layering choice if you’re going for a more casual look without resorting to a hoodie or a jumper. Sometimes you need a little extra.
