SUMMERY PRINTS FOR ALL YOUR WARM WEATHER EVENTS

Words: C. Saramowicz

Summer is a time for colour and prints. For festivals or barbecues, family gatherings or a trip to the pub, prints can turn a good look into a great one. They don’t have to be out there, though – sometimes a little addition is all you need to take an outfit up a notch. Read on to see our favourite printed shirts from this season.

SHOP PRINTED SHIRTS

Moss - off white and green printed cuban collar shirt

Sun print

Co-ord sets are great for times when you want to your outfit to feel put together. Paired together and you’ve got a cohesive look worthy of a great day out. Crafted from 100% cotton in a loose fit, our sun print set is light and breathable enough for a whole day in the heat. With a watercolour print that catches the eye, it’s great for any event where you want to make an impression.

Get the most out of your set by wearing the pieces as separates, too. Pair the shirt with tailored white shorts and taupe loafers, while the shorts work well with a white linen shirt for a bit of contrast.

Moss - taupe floral print cuban collar shirt

Muted florals

If you want something a bit more subtle, this floral print shirt ticks all the boxes. Featuring a silhouette floral print that climbs up from the shirt’s hem, the neutral tones mean it’s a great base for adding colour and accessories. If you do want to keep it simple, however, pair with a pair of white pleated shorts or linen trousers for an understated feel.

Topped with a Cuban collar, it’s a summer-ready piece that’s destined for events and casual affairs alike.

Moss - landscape print cuban collar shirt

Japanese landscape

If you’re heading somewhere truly special or just want to make an impact, choose a bold printed shirt that makes for a great conversation starter. Inspired by Japanese landscape art, the Cuban collar eases things up a bit but you’ll still look smart if you pair it with chino or pleated shorts and a pair of loafers. Crafted from a soft, drapey fabric that sits loosely across the shoulders, you’ll also be comfortable, wherever you’re headed.

How to pack for a destination wedding

For when the days around the big day call for great style too.

EVERYTHING YOU NEED FOR THAT OVERSEAS WEDDING

Words: C. Saramowicz

If you’ve been invited to a wedding abroad this year, your first thought is probably what to wear. A destination wedding is the perfect combination of holiday and celebration, meaning there’s plenty of opportunities to dress up and look the part. While some days will require a little less refinement, it’s a good idea to pack for all occasions so you’re both prepared and can make the most of your time away. Read on to see all the things you should put in your suitcase for the days ahead.

Moss - rust and ecru stripe open knit overshirt

Rehearsal dinner

A day or two before the main event, the rehearsal dinner can be a bit more relaxed than the wedding itself (though always check in with the couple ahead of time in case there‘s a specific dress code). If you don’t have to wear a suit, it’s still worth looking smart while keeping the weather in mind. A Cuban collar shirt, for example, is a great option – our take has an open-knit construction and is crafted from 100% cotton, making it a lightweight and breathable summer option. Add on a pair of tailored trousers, preferably from linen or cotton, and finish with light, velvety loafers.

Moss - sky peached smart swim shorts

Days by the pool

It’s not all nuptials and night parties; some days will be spent simply kicking back and taking it all in. This is where a solid pair of swimwear comes in, but one that is versatile enough to be worn to lunch as well as by the pool. With a hidden zip and button fastening and side adjusters, our soft, peached swim shorts are smart, comfortable and designed to be worn all day long. With moisturewicking properties to dry you off in no time, throw on a linen shirt in a contrasting colour and a pair of loafers for an outfit worthy of the bar.

Moss - off white crochet cuban shirt

Walks through town

If you’ve decided to stay abroad for a bit longer, it’s worth packing something you can explore in. Whether you’re by a Spanish seaside town, a quiet Italian piazza or a bustling city centre, it’s worth wearing something that’s airy and roomy so you’re not sweltering and can move with ease. A crochet Cuban can be worn open or closed depending on the temperature, and its open structure ensures a free flow of air. As for your bottom half, invest in a pair of cotton linen blend trousers that give ample breathing room and are comfortable enough to walk around town in all day.

Moss - tailored fit copper herringbone double breasted suit

The wedding

It’s here – the wedding day has arrived. As it’ll probably be warm where you are, a linen suit is a given. You don’t have to go traditional with off-white or navy though – try and a copper tone in a wool-silk-linen blend that looks great against natural backdrops without being too loud. If it’s a more casual affair, lose the tie and pair the suit with a shirt crafted from a light cotton-linen blend. The muted stripes add a bit of a variety to the look – wear it open collared for an laid-back summer vibe.

What to wear: Summer black tie weddings

Pool-side plans on the horizon? You’ll need a pair of these.

BLACK TIE OUTFITTING GETS A WARM WEATHER UPGRADE

Words: C. Saramowicz

It’s no surprise that blacktie weddings are on the rise – tuxedos, bow ties and a polished pair of shoes are the epitome of elegance. If you’re a groom, they’re a great way of ensuring everything feels cohesive, and you don’t have to worry about someone showing up in a colour or outfit you’re not particularly fond of. If you’re a guest, however, half the decision on what to wear has already been made for you. Let’s look at some of the options available.

SHOP BLACK TIE SUITS

Moss - slim fit black dress jacket

The classic black-tie look

There’s nothing quite like a traditional tuxedo with all the trimmings. To sharpen your silhouette, go for a slim fit like our black peak lapel tuxedo. The silky lapel and pocket trim offsets the matte fabric, offering an extra touch of luxury. Remember to pair yours with a dress shirt – Marcella shirts are slightly stiffer than other dress shirts, adding structure to your look.

SHOP TUXEDOS

Moss - tailored fit black linen shawl lapel tuxedo

The shawl lapel

If a notch lapel isn’t for you, try a tuxedo with a shawl lapel instead. You can learn more about all the different types of lapels here, but essentially, shawl lapels don’t feature notches or breaks in the fabric, consisting of one rounded, continuous edge that cascades all the way down to the buttonhole. They come in a variety of widths, with ours on the thinner side for a sleeker look. This one comes in a tailored fit which gives you a little more room than slim but still offers a refined finish.

Moss - tailored fit off white jacket

The white-tie look

If you really want to stand out from the crowd, white-tie is a great alternative to traditional dresswear. You don’t have to go all out in a full white suit, though – the jacket is more than enough to set the tone and get the heads turning. Our double breasted take is cut to a tailored fit with definition in the shoulders and arms. Keep it classic with black dress trousers and shoes, and choose a dress shirt with ruffles or folds on the placket for an extra bit of interest.

Remember to look to your wedding invite for this one – some black-tie dress codes may not include the option to wear white.

Moss - dress shoes

The finishing touches

Accessories are one of the most important parts of dresswear. There’s plenty of options, too – though lovers of more traditional black-tie styles will veer towards high-shine shoes such as these black patent monks, you also can pick something a bit more muted. A pair of velvet dress slippers, for example, make for a great alternative and add a regal touch to your look.

Moss - bow ties

As for bow ties, the world is your oyster. You can go classic with a traditional black version, try a contemporary take with oversized velvet, or make a statement with colour and pattern. It’s really down to your personality and personal preference. If you want to add a bit of character to your outfit without going overboard, our macro bow-ties made with Liberty fabric feature a muted floral motif that’ll add subtle contrast to a black-tie look. They also come with matching cummerbunds if you want to go all out.

Retro revival: How to wear Cuban collar shirts

Keeping workers cool in the tropics since the ’50s, the Cuban collar shirt’s a modern summer essential.
Moss - off white crochet cuban shirt

A SUMMER ESSENTIAL, REWORKED FOR NOW

Words: A. Stoyanova and C. Saramowicz

The Cubanstyle shirt, originally called guayabera, dates back to the 18th century, though sources can’t agree on its origins. Some trace to Cuba, others to Mexico or Thailand, but all are exotic, warm, summery locations. Regardless of its exact place of birth, the guayabera has existed for over two centuries, with different iterations created by various brands including us putting their own spin on one or more of the guayabera’s key features.

Where do Cuban collar shirts come from?

Cuban shirts were worn in many private and public settings. In Cuba, the style was often seen on soldiers and later by government officials, becoming increasingly popular with citizens too. In Mexico, the shirt was also worn for governmental activities but was most popular during wedding celebrations too.

Today, the long-sleeved guayabera is still worn as a form of national dress code by state officials in Cuba, Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic. However, traces of the guayabera are now mainly found in shirt collars, namely the Cuban collar shirt.

Moss - linen Cuban shirts

What are the features of a Cuban collar shirt?

There are several features that characterise the Cuban shirt, the most recognisable being the traditional four patch pockets on the front. Legend has it that these were created for carrying guayabas (Spanish for guavas), where its name could also have derived from. Another feature is the two stripes of embroidery placed vertically on the front.

As its origins suggest, the shirt is best suited for warm locations, so it’s usually made from lightweight fabrics such as cotton and linen and finished with a straight hem for a casual, untucked look.

When it comes to the collar, the first designs had a mandarin collar (an unfolded collar standing up). For warm climates this version wasn’t the most optimal option, so it evolved to what we call now the Cuban (or camp) collar – a double-notched, flat laying collar.

Are Guayaberas worn today?

Although the traditional two-pocket, vertically embroidered guayabera shirt are still seen today, the most famous remains are the Cuban collared shirts. Rocked by Elvis Presley, James Bond, Spiderman and The Talented Mr. Ripley alike, this style is versatile, easy to wear and your perfect summer companion.

Moss - cuban collared shirts

How to style a Cuban collar shirt

Due to the looser fit and dropped collar, Cuban collar shirts are traditionally styled in a more casual fashion. However, that doesn’t mean they can’t be worn for relaxed destination weddings – paired with a linen suit and suede loafers, you’ll exude carefree Cuban style. Try a pure white Cuban collar shirt with a warm toned suit like the copper linen for a bit of contrast.

For a paired-back leisurely look, however, choose one in a solid summery colour like sage or taupe and combine with a pair of pleated shorts for a bit of structure. In the heart of summer, pure linen or linen blends are your best bet, offering breathability and lightness. Our linen blends are slightly looser and have more drape, while the linens are still light but offer a bit more structure.

If you want to take it up a notch, go for a printed Cuban collar shirt. These are great for occasions where you want to make a statement or want to play around with colour. Our take features a striking landscape print and is crafted from a loose, drapey fabric which has a super soft handfeel, making it ideal for balmy summer evenings. Pair with navy shorts and neutral loafers to offset the deep blue tones.

For a bit of texture, knitted Cuban collar shirts will add a shot of interest to your look. Our crochet shirt is crafted from sustainable cotton and features an intricate pattern that looks great with a neutral bottom. Wear it open on its own, with a vest underneath or button it up when the sun goes down.

Moss - sage peached smart swim shorts

Beach to bar

Our swim shorts aren’t just for the poolside. Designed as a transitional piece, they are smart enough to see you from the beach to the bar (and vice versa) with ease. It’s the details that matter – with a concealed popper and zip fastening that smartens things up and side adjusters for a better fit, these aren’t your average swim trunks, fit for wearing as regulars shorts if you have plans before hitting the waves.

They also dry quickly, which is great if you’re been swimming all day and are ready to grab some lunch. Just throw on a skipper polo and a pair of loafers and you’re ready for the restaurant. If you prefer a breezier aesthetic, pair with a linen shirt, thrown open for a beachy look.

Moss - navy peached smart swim shorts

The every day swim short

If you prefer a more classic look, the sky stripe print ticks all the boxes. With an external drawstring, Bengal stripe print and a comfy mechanical stretch to the fabric, they’ll easily see you through all your home or away holiday plans. The print is subtle enough to style easily – just grab a linen shirt or a loose cotton tee and you’re ready for days by the pool.

Garden party

Garden parties are the perfect chance to get out your smart-casual summer gear. You want to look good, but also have enough room in your outfit to feel comfortable in the outdoors. Go for a knitted t-shirt in a neutral tone, crafted from the finest merino wool, as a base layer and build a tonal look from there.

Seersucker is a great fabric for the warmer months – it’s breathable, lightweight, and has a puckered texture which adds an extra layer of interest. A shacket and shorts set like our ecru seersucker is a great option for a garden event. You’ll look put together, and can always remove the jacket if it gets a bit too warm.

Formal sports event

Summer is a time for sports, and what better way to showcase your support than with a suit worthy of the track/field/court? If you’ve got your hands on a ticket with a dress code, a single breasted suit in a warm tone like sage or dusty pink is a great way to make a subtle statement. Pair it with a tailored fit shirt and finish off with a patterned tie to offset the suit – our take is by Italian tie specialists Bottinelli. Make sure you polish your shoes so they’re extra shiny.

Black tie summer ball

Sometimes, the occasion simply calls for a classic tuxedo. If you’re heading to a ball this summer, make sure you’ve got a suit worthy of showing off – an Italian tux, made from fabric expertly crafted by Italy’s oldest mill Barberis, will get the job done nicely. Made from wool and mohair in a tailored fit, the suit will do all the work for you – all you need is a crisp white dress shirt, a silk bow tie and high-shine dress shoes, and you’ll be turning heads for all the right reasons.

Knits aren’t just for winter – looser constructions and lighter yarns make for a textured alternative to polos and t-shirts. Wear them to the pub, a family barbecue, or pack them in your holiday suitcase and you’ve got a date night outfit that’ll keep you cool and add a level of interest to your look. Read on to learn more about open knits and how you can incorporate them into your wardrobe.

SHOP KNITTED SHIRTS

Moss - pink green open knitted skipper

What is an open-knit shirt?

Open-knit shirts are summer’s take on a regular knit. Usually short sleeved, they have a slightly looser weave which lets air circulate in the warmer months, keeping you cool. This open structure also allows you to layer them if necessary, but they’re often worn on their own.

Our open-knit shirts are crafted from 100% cotton in a relaxed fit, which makes them super breathable and perfect for laid-back summer events, while the Cuban collars adds a vintage feel. They come in both a classic polo and button-down style.

Moss - rust and ecru stripe open knit overshirt

How to style open-knit shirts

For our take, we’ve leaned into the stripes trend and gone for a retro-inspired look. This makes them real statement makers, coming in a range of rust, sage, taupe and dusty pink tones, but the vertical lines also flatter the body. Our open-knit skipper polos are a smart casual essential this summer – pair with white chinos or pleated trousers and finish with a pair of tonal loafers for a cohesive look.

As for our rust open-knit, it’s the perfect layering piece if you want to add a bit of depth to your outfit. Wear open over a t-shirt or vest for a more casual feel, or button it up and combine with a pair of taupe chinos and matching loafers.

How to wear: short sleeved shirts

Summer is almost here – it’s time to shorten those sleeves.

SHORT SLEEVED BUTTON DOWNS FOR WARM WEATHER PLANS

Words: C. Saramowicz

Whether you’re heading on holiday or staying closer to home, the incoming summer means short sleeved shirts are on the cards. Sure, everyone loves a t-shirt in the warmer months, but if you want to take your holiday outfitting up a notch it’s time to invest in a button down or two.

SHOP SHORT SLEEVE SHIRTS

Printed shirts

If you’re heading to a casual summer event or two, take it up a notch with a printed shirt. Choose a neutral bottom like navy, taupe or white so the shirts can truly shine – for a muted take, try the taupe floral print shirt which features a subtle design that can ease you into statement pieces. If you do choose to go bolder, the Japanese landscape print shirt is great for garden parties or evening drinks. Crafted from a drapey fabric that has a soft hand-feel, a Cuban collar adds a relaxed holiday touch.

Short sleeve Oxford shirts

Summer’s take on a workwear classic, short sleeve Oxfords are an easy way to maintain a level of smart in your weekday outfitting. Crafted from pure sustainable cotton in a range of seasonal colours, our take features a soft, washed finish that feels great on the skin (useful during a heatwave).

Wear them under suiting and you’ll keep cool while looking put together, or combine with chinos or pleated shorts for a softer take.

Knitted shirts

Yes, summer knits are a thing – but you have to get them right. Crafted correctly and they can offer a light and airy feel to your look, all while keeping you cool. Open knit shirts are a great example of this; made from mercerised cotton, the ecru skipper polo has an airy open knit structure which allows air to circulate and cool you down. The textured fabric looks great against smooth cotton shorts, and the classic polo neckline smartens things up nicely.

For a more casual approach, the crochet Cuban can be worn open or closed, which is great for adding depth to your outfit.
